Meet Flying Officer Divyanshi Singh: 1st NDA-Trained Woman Officer Commissioned into IAF Ground Duty Branch
In a landmark achievement for the Indian Armed Forces, Flying Officer Divyanshi Singh has become the first woman cadet trained at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, to be commissioned into the Ground Duty branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Her commissioning on 13 June 2026 at the Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal, represents not only a personal triumph but also a significant step forward in the progressive inclusion of women in combat and support roles across the services.
Early Inspiration from a Military Household
Divyanshi Singh grew up in a household deeply rooted in military values. Her father, an air warrior who served in the Indian Air Force, regularly shared stories of discipline, honour, and selfless duty. These narratives profoundly influenced her during her formative years, instilling in her a deep respect for the uniform and a desire to serve the nation.
When the NDA opened its doors to women following the Supreme Court of India’s landmark verdict in August 2021, Divyanshi seized the opportunity. She successfully cleared the highly competitive entrance examination and joined the academy as one of the first five women cadets in the pioneering batch.
Rigorous Training and Leadership at NDA
The National Defence Academy, India’s premier tri-service institution, presented a demanding environment of academic rigour, physical endurance, and character development. Over three years, Divyanshi underwent intensive military training alongside her male counterparts.
She distinguished herself through exceptional leadership qualities. Her peers and instructors recognised her potential, appointing her Cadet Quarter Master Sergeant — a prestigious leadership role involving the administration and management of cadet affairs. This appointment underscored the confidence placed in her by the institution.
In March 2025, Divyanshi graduated from the NDA along with the other women cadets of her batch. Their successful completion of the NDA course marked the beginning of a new era for women in India’s defence forces.

Excellence at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal
Following NDA graduation, Divyanshi proceeded to the Air Force Academy at Dundigal, Hyderabad, for branch-specific pre-commissioning training in the Ground Duty stream. The training encompassed advanced professional military education, operational knowledge, and leadership development tailored to IAF requirements.
Her performance at AFA was outstanding. She emerged at the top of her cohort in the Ground Duty branches, earning the President’s Plaque for standing first in the overall order of merit. This prestigious award is conferred upon cadets who demonstrate exceptional academic and professional excellence during their time at the academy.
Historic Commissioning Ceremony – 13 June 2026
On 13 June 2026, the Combined Graduation Parade (CGP) of the 217th Course (Spring Term) was held at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal. Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh reviewed the parade and awarded the President’s Commission to the graduating cadets.
A total of 231 Flight Cadets — comprising 194 men and 37 women — were commissioned into the Indian Air Force on this occasion. Among them was Flying Officer Divyanshi Singh, who entered the IAF’s Ground Duty branch as the first NDA-trained woman officer in this stream.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh personally presented the President’s Plaque to her in recognition of her meritorious performance. The ceremony was attended by senior military officials, proud parents, and dignitaries, capturing a moment of national pride.

A Milestone for Women in the Armed Forces
Flying Officer Divyanshi Singh’s achievement carries profound significance. Until recently, women’s entry into the NDA and their subsequent commissioning into the IAF were limited. Her success as part of the first batch of women NDA cadets demonstrates the effectiveness of policy reforms initiated after the 2021 Supreme Court judgment.
Her commissioning into the Ground Duty branch — which encompasses critical functions such as administration, logistics, accounts, education, and meteorology — opens new pathways for women officers aspiring to contribute to the IAF in diverse professional capacities.
Defence officials have noted that her accomplishment reflects the expanding opportunities for women in the armed forces and serves as a powerful inspiration for young women across the country who dream of wearing the uniform.
An Enduring Inspiration
At a time when the Indian Armed Forces are progressively enhancing gender integration, Flying Officer Divyanshi Singh stands as a symbol of perseverance, excellence, and quiet determination. Her journey — from listening to her father’s stories of service to earning the President’s Plaque and donning the uniform of a commissioned officer — embodies the values the armed forces seek to instil in every cadet.
For thousands of young girls preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and SSB interviews, her story offers tangible proof that dedication and merit can overcome historical barriers. It reinforces the message that the Indian military is steadily becoming an institution where talent, irrespective of gender, is recognised and rewarded.
As Flying Officer Divyanshi Singh begins her career in the Ground Duty branch of the Indian Air Force, she carries with her not only the legacy of her father’s service but also the hopes of a new generation of women officers who will follow in her footsteps.
