Captain Deepak Singh, an officer of the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals serving on deputation with the 48 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), exemplified the highest standards of courage, leadership, and selflessness. On 14 August 2024, at the age of 25, he made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-insurgency operation in the dense forests of Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir. For his gallant actions, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
A Legacy of Service: Early Life and Background
Born in 1999 in the picturesque Almora district of Uttarakhand, Captain Deepak Singh was raised in a disciplined family that instilled values of duty and patriotism. He was the son of Shri Mahesh Singh, a former police officer, and Smt. Champa Singh. Deepak grew up alongside his two elder sisters, Manisha and Jyoti, in an environment that naturally fostered a sense of responsibility and service to the nation.
Inspired by his father’s uniform and the rich military traditions of Uttarakhand, Deepak aspired to join the Indian Army from a young age. He excelled academically and in sports, particularly hockey, which honed his teamwork and resilience. He joined the Army through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES-35) and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Signals after completing his training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Gaya, in June 2020.
Following his initial service with his parent unit, Captain Singh was deputed to the 48 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Known for his tactical acumen and calm demeanor under pressure, he quickly earned the respect of his subordinates and peers.
The fateful Operation in Doda
On 13 August 2024, acting on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the Shivgarh-Assar forest area of Doda district—approximately 90 km from Doda town—security forces launched a joint operation involving the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police. Captain Deepak Singh led two teams from 48 RR into the challenging, boulder-strewn terrain.
As the column advanced, Captain Singh established a vantage point for effective surveillance. Around 1930 hours, he detected movement by terrorists and skillfully maneuvered his team to engage them, resulting in injuries to the adversaries. Despite the onset of darkness and difficult conditions, he maintained continuous vigil throughout the night.
At first light on 14 August 2024, Captain Singh reorganized his team for a systematic search. During this phase, the team recovered an M4 assault rifle, ammunition, and grenades. An injured terrorist, concealed among the boulders and abandoned by his associates, suddenly opened fire on the advancing soldiers.
Sensing immediate danger to his buddy soldier, Captain Singh unhesitatingly pushed the soldier to safety behind cover, fully exposing himself to the enemy’s line of fire. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the act. Undeterred by his grievous injuries, he advanced towards the threat, engaged the terrorist with precise fire, and inflicted severe injuries on the enemy before succumbing to his wounds. His prompt and courageous intervention saved the life of his comrade and neutralized the immediate threat.
Captain Deepak Singh attained martyrdom on 14 August 2024, embodying the finest traditions of the Indian Army through his selfless leadership and supreme sacrifice.
Recognition and Honour
In recognition of his exceptional bravery and devotion to duty, Captain Deepak Singh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. The award was announced on Republic Day 2025 and formally conferred by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 23 May 2025. His parents received the medal on his behalf.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other leaders paid rich tributes, highlighting Captain Singh as a proud son of the state whose sacrifice strengthened the nation’s resolve against terrorism. Memorial events and social media tributes continue to honour his memory.
