Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra

Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, SYSM, AVSM, VSM, stands as one of the most accomplished fighter pilots and operational leaders in the modern history of the Indian Air Force. Commissioned in December 1986, he superannuated on 30 April 2026 after nearly four decades of exemplary service. His career traversed the demanding worlds of frontline combat operations, experimental test piloting, wing-level command, and apex tri-service staff appointments. Most notably, as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Air Command, he directed critical operations during Operation Sindoor in May 2025 — a defining multi-domain campaign that showcased India’s precision air power and resolve against cross-border terrorism.

From NDA to the Cockpit: The Making of a Fighter Pilot

Born into a generation that witnessed India’s evolving strategic challenges, Jeetendra Mishra joined the National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla) and subsequently graduated from the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, as part of the 138 Course. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 6 December 1986 into the fighter stream.

Early in his career, he qualified as a Fighter Combat Leader and later as an experimental test pilot. He accumulated more than 3,000 flying hours across over 18 types of aircraft, including fighters, transports, and helicopters. His foundational operational experience came during the Kargil conflict. As a Squadron Leader, he formed part of the team that operationalised laser-guided bombs on Mirage 2000 aircraft. These precision munitions proved decisive in strikes on heavily defended targets such as Tiger Hill and Muntho Dhalo during Operation Safed Sagar.

This baptism by fire instilled in him a deep appreciation for technological adaptation, meticulous planning, and the human element of air warfare — qualities that defined his subsequent trajectory.

Test Pilot, Squadron Commander, and Wing Leader

Mishra’s career trajectory reflected a deliberate blend of operational flying and technical mastery. Promoted to Wing Commander in May 2003, he commanded the MOFTU Braveheart Squadron at Tezpur and later served as Chief Test Pilot at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Nasik Division. In this role, he played a pivotal part in ensuring the highest standards of newly produced Su-30 MKI aircraft and meeting demanding production targets.

As a Group Captain, he served as Chief Test Pilot at the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in Bangalore and as Director (Operational Planning and Assessment Group) at Air Headquarters. In June 2010, he led the Indian Air Force contingent during the multinational Exercise Garuda IV in France. His leadership ensured flawless execution, significantly enhancing India’s defence cooperation profile with participating nations.

Promoted to Air Commodore in June 2013, he commanded two critical frontline bases: No. 15 Wing at Bareilly and No. 18 Wing at Pathankot. These tenures honed his skills in base-level operational leadership and force application. He subsequently attended the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom before returning to Air Headquarters as Air Commodore (Air Staff Requirements).

Apex Leadership: From IDS to Western Air Command

Elevated to Air Vice Marshal in July 2019, Mishra served as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Projects) at Air Headquarters and later as Commandant of ASTE. His tenure at ASTE was marked by rigorous evaluation and induction support for critical platforms and systems.

In January 2023, he was promoted to Air Marshal and assumed the appointment of Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine, Organisation and Training) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. In December 2023, he transitioned to Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations), where he contributed significantly to joint operational planning and inter-service coordination.

On 1 January 2025, Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra took over as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command — one of the Indian Air Force’s most vital and operationally active commands, responsible for the defence of India’s western borders. He succeeded Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha and held the position until his superannuation on 30 April 2026. He was succeeded by Air Marshal George Thomas.

Operation Sindoor: Leadership Under Fire

The defining chapter of his tenure as AOC-in-C Western Air Command came in May 2025. Following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 tourists, India launched Operation Sindoor — a precise, multi-domain military response targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Under Air Marshal Mishra’s leadership, Western Air Command played a central role in the air campaign. The IAF achieved measurable air superiority over significant portions of Pakistani airspace by 10 May 2025, enabling sustained precision strikes using advanced munitions. Reports from international defence assessments noted the IAF’s ability to conduct long-range stand-off attacks with relative freedom, compelling strategic recalibrations.

Throughout the operation, Mishra emphasised operational tempo, integration of air power with other domains, and the imperative of staying ahead of the adversary’s decision cycle. His command’s performance during this high-stakes campaign earned widespread recognition within the services and the nation.

Honours and Decorations

Air Marshal Mishra’s distinguished service has been recognised with some of the highest peacetime and wartime awards:

  • Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM): Awarded for his exceptional leadership of Western Air Command during Operation Sindoor. The medal was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 (Phase II) on 29 June 2026.
  • Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM): Conferred on 26 January 2024 for outstanding contributions at the Integrated Defence Staff.
  • Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM): Awarded on 26 January 2013 (as Group Captain). The citation praised his leadership as Commanding Officer of a MiG-21 squadron (achieving exceptional serviceability and readiness), Chief Test Pilot at HAL (ensuring high-quality Su-30 MKI output), Director (Projects) for critical upgrades including Su-30 MKI Block IV and BrahMos integration, and his role in Exercise Garuda IV. It also highlighted his operational acumen in inter-service planning and exercises.

He also received the Samanya Seva Medal, Special Service Medal, Sainya Seva Medal, and various long-service and anniversary medals.

A Legacy of Professionalism and Precision

Throughout his career, Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra exemplified the rare combination of a combat-experienced fighter pilot, a technically astute test pilot, and a strategic leader capable of operating at the highest levels of joint command. His contributions to aircraft induction, operational upgrades, multinational exercises, and real-world combat operations have left an indelible mark on the Indian Air Force.

Even after superannuation, his insights — particularly on the role of air power in contemporary conflicts, as shared in professional forums — continue to inform doctrine and thinking within the defence community.

For defence aspirants and serving personnel alike, Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra’s journey offers a compelling narrative: from the cockpit of a Mirage 2000 over the heights of Kargil to commanding one of India’s most critical air commands during Operation Sindoor. It is a story of relentless professionalism, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to national security.
