Major Mustafa Bohara's Heroic Sacrifice: Award-Winning Army Pilot Saves Civilians by Steering Burning Helicopter to Safety

Major Mustafa Bohara of the Indian Army Aviation Corps is remembered as an emblem of valor, professionalism, and selflessness. Posthumously honored with the Shaurya Chakra, he sacrificed his life on October 21, 2022, at just 27 years old during an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in Arunachal Pradesh. In his final moments, he courageously maneuvered a flaming helicopter away from populated areas, thereby saving numerous civilian lives and exemplifying the highest ideals of the Indian Army.

Born on May 14, 1995, in Kheroda village, Udaipur district, Rajasthan, Major Bohara was raised in a family steeped in integrity and duty. His father, Shri Zakiuddin Bohara, worked in Kuwait, while his mother, Smt. Fatima Bohara, played a pivotal role in his disciplined upbringing. From a young age, he was motivated by a clear goal—to serve his nation in uniform.

He began his education at Uday Shiksha Mandir in Kheroda and later attended St. Paul’s School in Udaipur. His ambition and dedication led him to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, where he joined the 128th Course. Upon completing his training, he moved to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun and was commissioned as a Lieutenant into the Mahar Regiment.

Driven by a love for flying, Major Bohara volunteered for the Army Aviation Corps, undergoing rigorous training, including advanced flying courses at the Combat Army Aviation School in Nashik. He became a skilled pilot on the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH-WSI) Rudra, a crucial combat platform for the Army. By 2022, he had achieved the rank of Major and was serving with the 252 Army Aviation Squadron in the challenging terrains of the North-East.

On October 21, 2022, Major Bohara was part of a five-member crew on an ISR mission near the Indo-China border, flying as co-pilot with Major Vikas Bhambhu. The mission was proceeding smoothly until 10:28 AM, when a catastrophic mid-air fire engulfed the helicopter near Migging in Upper Siang district, causing it to lose altitude rapidly and become uncontrollable.

In the face of imminent danger, the pilots had limited choices. An emergency landing in an open area posed significant risks to civilians and could trigger an explosion near an ammunition storage site. In those critical moments, Major Bohara and his co-pilot prioritized the safety of civilians over their own lives.

Exhibiting remarkable calmness and skill under extreme pressure, they diverted the burning helicopter away from populated areas towards an uninhabited mountainous region. The helicopter crash-landed around 10:43 AM, resulting in the loss of all five crew members. However, their heroic actions prevented a potential disaster on the ground.

Major Mustafa Bohara was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu on August 15, 2023, for his extraordinary bravery. The award was presented to his parents during a Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 5, 2024. The official citation praised the pilots’ exceptional courage, quick thinking, and unwavering dedication to saving lives despite the certainty of death.

At the time of the tragedy, Major Bohara was engaged and preparing to marry, adding to the profound loss experienced by his family. In the face of overwhelming grief, his mother expressed that soldiers never truly die, as they continue to live on in the hearts of the nation they have served.

Major Mustafa Bohara’s journey, from a modest village in Rajasthan to the skies above Arunachal Pradesh, encapsulates the spirit of dedication, bravery, and sacrifice. His actions on that fateful day serve as a testament to the quiet heroism that defines India’s armed forces. By choosing the lives of others over his own, he not only embodied the ethos of "Service Before Self" but also secured his place among the nation's heroes.
