Major Anuj Sood, posthumously honored with the Shaurya Chakra, exemplified valor, leadership, and selflessness in his service with the Indian Army. Serving as a Company Commander in the 21st Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, on loan from the 19th Battalion, Brigade of the Guards, he made the ultimate sacrifice on May 2, 2020, during a counter-insurgency mission in Handwara, Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. He led an operation into a building occupied by terrorists to rescue civilians, ultimately losing his life in the effort. His bravery was recognized with the Shaurya Chakra, India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award, after his death.
Born on December 17, 1989, Major Sood spent his early years at the Air Force Command Hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Major Sood received his schooling at Army Public School, Udhampur, and Punjab Public School, Nabha. In 2008, he entered the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, where he distinguished himself as a disciplined and capable cadet. Although offered opportunities in engineering at renowned institutions, he chose a military career.
During his tenure at the NDA, he excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities, holding significant appointments like Company Quarter Master Sergeant, and engaged in activities such as paragliding and equestrian training. His consistent performance earned him the title of a "torch holder," signifying excellence among cadets.
He then advanced to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he continued to exhibit outstanding leadership qualities. Commissioned into the Brigade of the Guards on June 9, 2012, he graduated as the Senior Under Officer, setting high standards of professionalism early on.
To further his intellectual pursuits, Major Sood completed an M.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, graduating with distinction.
Major Sood's military career began with the 19th Battalion, Brigade of the Guards, where he served in key roles such as Platoon Commander, Adjutant, and Aide-de-Camp to a General Officer Commanding of the 14 RAPID Division. By May 2, new intelligence indicated that armed terrorists had barricaded themselves in a civilian home in Chanjimulla village, holding residents hostage. The situation required swift action.
As Company Commander, Major Sood set up a secure perimeter around the area with his Combat Action Team. Recognizing the urgent risk to civilian lives, he chose to personally lead the entry team into the house, accompanied by his Commanding Officer and fellow soldiers.
Inside, they faced strong resistance in a close-quarters battle. Despite being under heavy fire and sustaining injuries, Major Sood demonstrated exceptional bravery and composure. He engaged the terrorists directly, wounding them and ensuring the trapped civilians were safely evacuated.
In the intense confrontation, Major Sood and four other brave personnel — including his Commanding Officer Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Naik Rajesh Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Singh, and Jammu and Kashmir Police Sub-Inspector Shakeel Qazi — were killed. Their actions led to the neutralization of the terrorists and the successful rescue of civilians.
For his remarkable bravery and selfless commitment, Major Anuj Sood was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra on January 26, 2021.
The official citation praised his fearless leadership and disregard for personal safety in rescuing civilians and confronting terrorists. The award was received by his wife, Aakriti Singh Sood, acknowledging his gallant actions and ultimate sacrifice.
