Mahesh Dixit Takes Charge as Director of India's Intelligence Bureau

The Government of India has announced the appointment of senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the premier domestic intelligence agency in the country. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has given its approval for this appointment.

Mahesh Dixit, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1993 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, takes over the position from the incumbent IB chief, who has completed their tenure.

Renowned for his extensive experience in intelligence operations and internal security, Dixit is considered one of the most seasoned intelligence officers in the nation. Throughout his career in the Intelligence Bureau, he has managed key assignments focusing on counter-terrorism, Left-Wing Extremism, and cross-border security.

A notable assignment in his career was serving as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar, overseeing intelligence activities in Jammu, Kashmir, and Leh. His efforts during the period following the abrogation of Article 370 have been credited with bolstering intelligence gathering and maintaining internal security.

Dixit is recognized for his robust field intelligence network and expertise in counter-insurgency operations. His work has been closely linked with combating Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, cross-border infiltration, radicalisation, and narco-terrorism.

As the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Dixit steps into the role amidst ongoing internal security challenges faced by India, including terrorism, cyber threats, organized crime, and emerging security risks.

Security experts acknowledge that his extensive operational experience and profound understanding of the security dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir will be instrumental in developing the Intelligence Bureau's future strategy and enhancing coordination among various security and intelligence agencies.

Operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence Bureau is India's oldest intelligence organization, entrusted with domestic intelligence gathering, counter-intelligence operations, counter-terrorism efforts, and safeguarding national security.

Dixit's appointment underscores the government's focus on experienced leadership to tackle emerging security challenges and reinforce the country's internal security framework.
