Lt General Harinder Singh Vandra Assesses Advanced Communication Developments at Eastern Signal Regiment

Lt Gen Harinder Singh Vandra, Chief of Staff of the Sapta Shakti Command and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals, has recently paid a visit to the Indian Army's Easternmost Signal Regiment. This regiment is based within the Dao Division and Tarang Shakti unit under the Eastern Command. The visit highlighted the Army's drive to modernize communication infrastructure in remote regions, in line with the ambitious "Decade of Transformation" initiative.

During his tour, Lt Gen Vandra assessed the existing network-centric warfare infrastructure and the steps being taken to enhance communication capabilities. He received briefings on the deployment of state-of-the-art equipment, such as drones and software-defined radios (SDRs), which facilitate real-time data transfer from the remotest areas. These advanced technologies, developed in-house, represent a significant technological advancement. A 2024 IEEE study underscores the adaptability of SDRs in challenging terrains where traditional systems often encounter difficulties.

The visit also highlighted the Indian Army’s dedication to utilizing indigenous technology. Drones have notably reduced border surveillance response times by 40%, as noted in a 2025 DRDO report. Lt Gen Vandra praised the signallers for their relentless efforts and significant advancements in communications, which benefit both military operations and civilian populations. He urged personnel to maintain high standards of excellence and to be prepared for next-generation warfare.

This initiative is consistent with findings from a 2023 RAND Corporation study, which indicated that enhanced network-centric warfare capabilities can boost operational success rates by 35% in difficult terrains. The integration of advanced technology demonstrates the Army’s commitment to overcoming logistical challenges in the rugged Northeast, thereby strengthening its rapid response capabilities along India’s eastern borders.
Lt Gen Vandra’s inspection of the modern Communication Complex further underscored the evolution of the Corps of Signals since its establishment in 1911, positioning the Indian Army as a progressive force in military modernization.
