Lt Gen Sandeep Jain Concludes Tenure as Southern Command Chief, Transitions to Vice Chief of Army Staff Role

Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, AVSM, SM, concluded his service as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command on June 30, 2026. He is set to take on the role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff starting July 1, 2026.

Lt Gen Jain commemorated his departure by laying a wreath at the Southern Command War Memorial in Pune, honoring the nation's fallen heroes. This was followed by a review of a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Headquarters Southern Command, effectively marking the end of his command.

In his farewell address to the personnel of the Southern Command, Lt Gen Jain highlighted the necessity for all soldiers to remain mission-focused, ensure high levels of operational readiness, and be prepared to tackle emerging security threats decisively. He stressed the importance of professionalism, vigilance, and operational excellence in safeguarding national interests.

Throughout his command, Lt Gen Jain managed one of the Indian Army's largest operational units, concentrating on combat readiness, modernization efforts, technology integration, and troop welfare. His leadership reinforced the Southern Command's critical role in India's defense strategy.

Effective July 1, 2026, Lt Gen Sandeep Jain will serve as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, bringing with him extensive operational expertise and strategic leadership to the Indian Army's second-highest position.
