Lt Gen Pratik Sharma Reviews Security Situation, Troop Readiness in South Kashmir

Srinagar, September 7, 2026: Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma has carried out a fresh review of the security situation and operational readiness of troops deployed in South Kashmir, urging continued vigilance and tighter coordination among all stakeholders to deal with emerging challenges.

Lt Gen Sharma, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Northern Command, visited hinterland units in South Kashmir to assess the prevailing security environment and examine the preparedness of formations tasked with maintaining stability in their respective areas.

During the visit, he was briefed on the current security picture as well as the state of readiness of the troops deployed across the region. The review focused on how effectively the formations are positioned to respond to changing conditions on the ground.

The Army Commander emphasised the need to sustain a high level of alertness and to ensure effective synergy with all stakeholders. According to the briefing, he underlined that close coordination and operational preparedness remain essential for responding to evolving security challenges.

The visit comes as the Army continues to maintain a strong security posture across the Kashmir Valley, with troops deployed in both hinterland and forward areas remaining alert to potential threats. Security management in the region continues to depend on sustained readiness and coordination across formations.

Lt Gen Sharma also interacted with personnel during the visit and praised them for their professionalism, dedication and commitment to safeguarding national security.

This latest review follows another visit by the Northern Army Commander to South Kashmir in late August, when he was briefed on evolving security dynamics, operational challenges and the steps being taken to reinforce the security grid. That earlier assessment also placed emphasis on the use of technology to improve surveillance, intelligence gathering and operational awareness.

At that time, Lt Gen Sharma had called on troops to remain proactive, adaptive and mission-ready while sustaining operational dominance.

The Northern Command continues to oversee strategically important areas across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, with operational preparedness, inter-agency coordination and troop readiness remaining among its central priorities.
