Lt Gen Harpal Singh Welcomes Newly Inducted GREF Officers into BRO

Lieutenant General Harpal Singh, AVSM, VSM, Director General Border Roads (DGBR), formally welcomed newly inducted General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) officers into the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on August 25, 2026, as they began their careers in one of India’s key strategic infrastructure institutions.

The induction ceremony was more than a routine welcome. For the young officers, it marked entry into an organisation that builds and maintains the roads, bridges, tunnels, airfields and other infrastructure needed to improve connectivity in India’s border regions and support military mobility in sensitive areas.

Addressing the officers, Lt Gen Harpal Singh stressed the weight of the responsibilities they were taking on and asked them to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, dedication and integrity throughout their service. He urged them to contribute wholeheartedly to the organisation and to continue BRO’s tradition of delivering strategically important projects in some of the country’s most difficult terrain and climatic conditions.

GREF officers form the core of BRO’s workforce. The cadre includes officers and personnel from engineering, administrative and other specialised streams, and works alongside personnel drawn from the Armed Forces to plan, execute and manage infrastructure projects across the organisation’s operational areas.

Their role is especially critical because BRO’s projects serve both civilian and strategic purposes. A road or bridge built in a remote border region can connect isolated communities to the rest of the country while also helping the Armed Forces move personnel, equipment and supplies more quickly.

BRO’s work is carried out in some of the harshest environments in the country. Its teams operate in high-altitude regions and in areas marked by extreme temperatures, heavy snowfall, landslides, difficult geological conditions and short construction seasons. That makes the organisation’s work dependent not only on technical skill, but also on resilience and the ability to operate in demanding field conditions.

Lt Gen Harpal Singh’s remarks on professionalism and integrity were particularly relevant given the scale and complexity of the projects handled by the organisation. Young officers in the GREF can be entrusted early in their careers with significant responsibilities involving manpower, equipment, construction resources and project execution in difficult locations.

The DGBR also called on the new officers to help strengthen BRO’s standing as a leading organisation of its kind and to live up to the standards expected from the next generation of its leadership.

The induction comes at a time when development of infrastructure along India’s borders continues to receive close attention. Improved connectivity in frontier regions is seen as important both for national security and for economic activity, while also improving access for local populations.

That effort is also being shaped by changes in construction technology, tunnelling, bridge engineering, geospatial planning and modern project-management practices. For the newly inducted GREF officers, this means entering a professional environment where engineering expertise must increasingly be matched with technological adaptability and innovation.

BRO has described its personnel as “Karmayogis”, a term that reflects the organisation’s culture of service and commitment to completing difficult assignments in areas where conventional construction is exceptionally challenging.

For the officers welcomed on August 25, the ceremony signalled the beginning of that responsibility. Their future assignments may take them to some of India’s most remote regions, where their decisions and engineering work can directly affect connectivity, development and operational preparedness.

The occasion therefore represented both a formal start and a reminder of the broader mission ahead, as the next generation of GREF officers begins its journey with the Border Roads Organisation under the guiding principles of service, excellence and “Nation First.”
