Lt Gen Devendra Sharma Discusses 21st Century Military Leadership at Defense Management College
Lieutenant General Devendra Sharma, who heads the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), addressed participants of the 21st Higher Defence Management Course at the College of Defence Management. His speech focused on “Military Leadership in the 21st Century.”
Lt Gen Sharma stressed that modern military leadership is built on the essential elements of character, professional skill, and cognitive flexibility. He pointed out that while the core principles of leadership remain unchanged, today's military leaders need to adjust to the swiftly changing operational landscapes influenced by technological advancements, complexity, and unpredictability.

The Army Commander emphasized the need for timeless attributes such as character, courage, and empathy to blend with modern leadership traits like forward-thinking leadership, technological expertise, and cognitive superiority. He explained that this blend is critical to develop innovative and adaptable military capabilities, maintaining the trust placed in military leaders by the nation.

During his visit, Lt Gen Sharma also engaged with officers from allied foreign nations attending the course, emphasizing the significance of professional military education and international collaboration. He also acknowledged select faculty and staff at CDM for their outstanding contributions to the institute's development and strive for excellence.

The discussions reiterated ARTRAC's commitment to cultivating future-ready military leaders capable of navigating complex, multi-dimensional operational scenarios.
