Lt Gen Avinash Das Unveils India's First 3D Ophthalmic Microscope with Intraoperative OCT at Army Hospital (R&R)
The Army Hospital (Research & Referral) has introduced a cutting-edge 3D Ophthalmic Microscope (ZEISS ARTEVO 850) with Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). This development was officially marked by Lieutenant General Avinash Das, who inaugurated the technology shortly after taking over as the Commandant of the leading military medical facility.
A Landmark Step in Military Medical Modernisation
This acquisition marks a significant advancement in the modernisation efforts of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), distinguishing it as the first of its kind in any governmental setup within India. The initiative was driven by the strategic vision of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS).
Revolutionising Surgical Precision and Training
The ZEISS ARTEVO 850 offers heads-up digital surgery capabilities, enhancing ergonomics and comfort for surgeons during extensive, intricate procedures. By incorporating real-time intraoperative OCT imaging, it allows ophthalmic surgeons to view minute details during operations, thereby improving precision, safety, and clinical outcomes.

The digital system also supports advanced training and education, providing high-definition live visuals for medical trainees and specialists. This is a critical step in preparing future-ready surgical teams within AFMS hospitals.
Strengthening the Apex Military Hospital’s Capabilities
Under the leadership of Lt Gen Avinash Das, the Army Hospital (R&R) is bolstering its status as a leader in healthcare, research, and innovation. It combines world-class medical technology with a commitment to service and compassion.

The introduction of the ARTEVO 850 highlights the hospital’s dedication to providing the most advanced medical care to active service members, veterans, and their families, while also cementing AFMS’s role at the forefront of India's medical progress.
