Lt Cdr Harshul Bhat: Indian Navy Hero Honored for Remarkable Anti-Piracy Operation
Lieutenant Commander Harshul Bhat of the Indian Navy's Marine Commandos (MARCOS) has been honored with the Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry) for his exemplary leadership during a challenging anti-piracy mission. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi presented the award to Lt Cdr Bhat at the 2025 Naval Investiture Ceremony.
Hailing from Jammu, Lt Cdr Harshul Bhat is an alumnus of MHAC School, Nagbani, and Stephen International Public School, RS Pura. Since his commissioning in 2018, he has quickly ascended through the ranks to become the Team Commander of MARCOS, the Navy's elite unit known for conducting special operations in difficult maritime environments.
On March 16, 2024, Lt Cdr Bhat led a mission to free 17 hostages aboard the MV Ruen, a vessel sailing under the Maltese flag that had been hijacked by 35 Somali pirates. The ship, seized in December 2023, was being used as a base for launching maritime attacks.
As part of the INS Kolkata’s anti-piracy task force under Operation Sankalp, Lt Cdr Bhat and his 14-member team undertook a high-risk boarding operation. Despite being outnumbered, he managed to secure crucial areas of the ship and diffuse the situation after a tense 40-hour standoff. The mission resulted in the safe release of all hostages and the pirates' surrender, achieving this without any casualties.
Admiral Dinesh Tripathi praised Lt Cdr Bhat and other awardees during the ceremony, noting: "The bravery and professionalism demonstrated by our officers continue to uphold India’s maritime security and global reputation. Lt Cdr Harshul Bhat’s courage embodies the highest traditions of the Indian Navy."
The rescue operation for MV Ruen was part of Operation Sankalp, which was initiated to address the escalating threats to global shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This ongoing security effort involves more than 30 Indian warships and surveillance aircraft. Lt Cdr Bhat's successful mission significantly contributed to India’s efforts in combating piracy and ensuring safe navigation in international waters.
Lt Cdr Harshul Bhat's recognition took place at the Naval Investiture Ceremony held at Nausena Bhawan in Delhi, attended by senior naval officials and families of the honorees. The event celebrated 51 individuals for their bravery and exceptional service, with Lt Cdr Bhat's story standing out as a testament to heroism and dedication.
