Lieutenant Vishal Kumar Awarded Sword of Honour and Gold Medal at Indian Military Academy Graduation

In a remarkable display of perseverance and military competence, Lieutenant Vishal Kumar, the son of a retired Sepoy from the 4 Bihar Regiment, has been honored with the prestigious Sword of Honour and Gold Medal at the Indian Military Academy's Passing Out Parade in Dehradun on June 13, 2026.

Lieutenant Vishal Kumar achieved distinction as the top all-round officer cadet of the 158th Regular Course. He excelled in various domains, including academics, military training, physical fitness, leadership, and extracurricular activities. The Sword of Honour is the highest accolade for an officer cadet at IMA, while the Gold Medal recognizes the cadet with the highest Order of Merit.

The Passing Out Parade, reviewed by President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, saw the commissioning of over 500 officer cadets, including those from allied foreign nations, into the Indian Army.

This event marked a significant milestone with the commissioning of the first batch of nine female officer cadets from the National Defence Academy, signifying an important step forward for women in the Indian Armed Forces.

Lieutenant Vishal Kumar hails from Patna, Bihar. His father, Vinod Kumar, previously served in the 4 Bihar Regiment as a Sepoy, while his mother, Anjana, is a homemaker. Growing up in a military family, Vishal was exposed to the values of discipline, sacrifice, and service that are emblematic of the Armed Forces.

Despite being the son of a soldier, Vishal aspired to become a commissioned officer. His accomplishment at IMA makes him the first officer in his family, fulfilling the aspirations of a soldier's household with his remarkable success.

Vishal's journey towards a military career began during his time at Rashtriya Military School, Chail. The disciplined and military-focused environment there played a crucial role in shaping his character and spurring his ambition to join the National Defence Academy.

Motivated by the training culture modeled on the NDA, he prepared rigorously for the entrance examination, clearing it on his first attempt. Following three years of intensive training at the National Defence Academy, he proceeded to the Indian Military Academy for his final pre-commission training phase.

At IMA, Vishal stood out in all aspects of cadet life. His consistent discipline and leadership skills earned him the role of Academy Cadet Adjutant, a highly esteemed position for an officer cadet.

As Academy Cadet Adjutant, he played a key role during the Passing Out Parade, marching at the rear of the parade contingent. This position reflected the confidence placed in him by the Academy's leadership.

His exceptional performance throughout his training earned him both the Sword of Honour and the Gold Medal. Academy Under Officer Prince Raj received the Silver Medal for second place in the Order of Merit, while Senior Under Officer Tejas Bhatt took the Bronze Medal for third place.

Following the traditional pipping ceremony, where parents place the rank stars on the shoulders of the newly commissioned officers, Lieutenant Vishal Kumar expressed his gratitude to his instructors and family for their support in his journey.

"I owe this to my instructors and my parents, who invested so much time in this. They prioritized this goal above other things, and that is how I achieved this milestone today," he stated.

Reflecting on the foundation of his military ambitions, Lieutenant Vishal noted that his education at a military school introduced him to an NDA-inspired environment and training system.

"I attended a military school during my childhood, where the environment and training methods were modeled after the NDA. That inspired me to join the NDA, and today, I have received my commission," he said.

For his father, who once served in the Indian Army as a Sepoy, witnessing his son receiving the Sword of Honour and becoming a Lieutenant was an emotional and proud moment. Vishal's journey from a soldier's home to the top of his IMA course underscores the meritocratic nature of the Armed Forces, where dedication and performance enable individuals to rise regardless of their background.

During her address, President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the newly commissioned officers and reminded them of the responsibilities they would bear in leading soldiers in challenging operational environments. She stressed the importance of character, competence, courage, and commitment in military leadership.

The parade included traditional elements associated with officer commissioning, such as the Nishan Ceremony and the Antim Pag. By taking the Antim Pag across the Chetwode Building threshold, the cadets symbolically transitioned from trainees to commissioned officers of the Indian Army.

The ceremony also featured a flypast and the presentation of the Chief of the Army Staff Banner to the Champion Company for its overall performance during the training term.

Lieutenant Vishal Kumar's achievement is not just a personal triumph. His journey has become an inspiration for many young Indians preparing to join the Armed Forces through the NDA, CDS, and the Services Selection Board process.

His story illustrates that achieving excellence at a military academy requires more than academic skills. Physical endurance, leadership, teamwork, integrity, mental resilience, and consistent performance under pressure are equally crucial in shaping an officer.

From being the son of a Sepoy in the 4 Bihar Regiment to earning the Indian Military Academy's highest honor, Lieutenant Vishal Kumar carries forward his father's military legacy while forging his own identity.

As he embarks on his career as a commissioned officer, Lieutenant Vishal Kumar holds not only the Sword of Honour and Gold Medal but also the hopes of countless soldiers' families and defense aspirants who see their aspirations reflected in his extraordinary journey.
