Lieutenant Simranjeet Kaur Chahal Returns to Haryana Village After Commissioning in Indian Army

From Sirsgarh village in Haryana’s Ambala district, Simranjeet Kaur Chahal has joined the Indian Army as a Lieutenant, carrying forward a family tradition of military service that now spans three generations. Her commissioning adds another officer to a household already closely tied to the armed forces, with her grandfather, father and brother all having served in uniform.

Lieutenant Simranjeet returned to her native village on Monday, September 7, 2026, in full uniform and was greeted with a celebratory welcome from family members and villagers. Residents assembled about a kilometre outside Sirsgarh, near the village school, where they received her with dhol-nagara, flowers and garlands before accompanying her home in a procession-like reception.

The Chahal family’s association with the Army began with her grandfather, Gunner Gurdayal Singh, who served with 13 Field Regiment. Her father, Captain Arvinder Singh, retired after serving with 193 Medium Regiment. The tradition has continued into the next generation as well: Simranjeet’s younger brother, Anshdeep Singh, is currently serving with the Sikh Regiment.

That military lineage is now reflected in the family’s present as well as its past. With both siblings in uniform and their father having retired from service, the Chahals have retained a direct link to the armed forces across three generations.

Simranjeet’s path to the officer cadre was shaped by her education and by years of exposure to Army life at home. She studied at Angel Public School in Barara before completing a Bachelor of Computer Applications from SD College, Ambala Cantonment. She later earned a Master of Computer Applications from Kurukshetra University.

Her interest in joining the Army, however, began much earlier. Watching her grandfather and father in uniform while growing up left a deep impression on her and gradually turned into an ambition to serve as an officer. During her college years, she joined the National Cadet Corps, which further strengthened that resolve.

Her younger brother’s own entry into the Army also became a motivating factor. Around three years younger than her, Anshdeep Singh joined the service before she did, and seeing him in uniform added to her determination to earn a commission.

According to local reports, Simranjeet cleared the Combined Defence Services examination after finishing her postgraduate studies. She then underwent officer training before being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.

Back in Sirsgarh, her arrival turned into a village-wide celebration. Captain Arvinder Singh said the atmosphere at the family home felt like a wedding, and that the joy of seeing his daughter return as an Army officer was greater than he had imagined. He added that the happiness multiplied when villagers joined the family in celebrating her achievement.

After the homecoming reception, Lieutenant Simranjeet visited Baba Jorawar Singh–Baba Fateh Singh Gurdwara Sahib at Dosarka, where Baba Jasvir Singh Khalsa honoured her with a siropa and blessed her for her future in military service.

Captain Arvinder Singh said that patriotism and service to the country had long been part of the family’s identity. Having served himself, he said he was proud to see both his son and daughter choose the armed forces and continue that tradition.

Lieutenant Simranjeet, meanwhile, said discipline, determination and self-belief helped her reach this stage. In her message to young aspirants, she urged them to dream big, remain confident and keep working steadily towards their goals.

Her story has quickly become a matter of pride in Sirsgarh and the surrounding area, especially for young women from rural backgrounds who look to higher education and the armed forces as career paths. From a village in Ambala district to the officer ranks of the Indian Army, Simranjeet Kaur Chahal’s commissioning has added a new chapter to a family history already defined by service.
