Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh Assumes Role as Vice Chief of Indian Army

Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh has officially assumed the position of Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), succeeding Lt Gen N.S. Raja Subramani in a ceremony that highlighted both tradition and sacrifice. This leadership transition is significant as the Indian Army continues its efforts towards modernization and strategic preparedness.

The day commenced with Lt Gen Singh paying homage at the National War Memorial in New Delhi by laying a wreath in memory of the fallen soldiers. Among those remembered were the soldiers from Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka. In July 1989, then 2nd Lieutenant Singh led a 13-member Quick Reaction Team that was ambushed by LTTE militants. His decisive actions under fire resulted in the elimination of four terrorists and injuring several others, despite the loss of five men from his team.

Commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) in 1987, Lt Gen Singh's distinguished 38-year career encompasses crucial operational roles in high-altitude and counter-insurgency areas. He is a veteran of Operations Meghdoot, Orchid, Rakshak, and Snow Leopard. Additionally, he served in United Nations missions in Lebanon and Sri Lanka and was recently the Director General of Operational Logistics & Strategic Movement.

At South Block, Lt Gen Singh received a Guard of Honour as he formally assumed his new role, witnessed by senior military officers and civilian dignitaries. The ceremony also welcomed Veer Naris and families of martyrs, emphasizing the Army's unwavering commitment to those who serve and sacrifice.

His appointment as Vice Chief comes at a critical juncture when the Army is integrating advanced technologies and reshaping its combat doctrines to meet emerging threats. Lt Gen Singh is anticipated to have a significant impact on accelerating capability development and implementing reforms in operational logistics and strategic mobility.

The elevation of Lt Gen Singh to the Vice Chief position ensures the continuity of experienced leadership, focusing on maintaining preparedness, driving transformation, and prioritizing the welfare of the ranks.
