India Defends Russian Oil Imports Amid US Tariff Threats

India has firmly responded to recent criticism by the United States and the European Union regarding its ongoing purchase of Russian oil, labeling the pressure as "unjustified and unreasonable." The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that India's energy imports are driven by national interests and energy security, dismissing the latest allegations from US President Donald Trump.

This strong rebuttal followed Trump's claims that India is acquiring "massive amounts" of Russian crude and reselling it for substantial profits. The US President has already revealed plans to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, 2025, citing what he perceives as unfair trade practices and India's "anti-American" stance within the BRICS alliance.

The MEA clarified that India turned to discounted Russian oil following the disruption of traditional supply chains due to the Ukraine conflict, which saw many Middle Eastern suppliers redirecting shipments to Europe. The ministry noted that the United States initially encouraged such purchases to help stabilize global energy markets but is now critiquing India, despite its own ongoing trade with Russia.

Pointing out what it described as Western hypocrisy, the statement highlighted 2024 EU–Russia bilateral trade in goods totaling €67.5 billion, accompanied by €17.2 billion in services. It also mentioned that European imports of Russian LNG hit a record 16.5 million tonnes in 2024, surpassing previous highs. The ministry listed European imports of fertilizers, chemicals, steel, and machinery from Russia, alongside continued US imports of uranium hexafluoride, palladium, and fertilizers.

The MEA underscored that India's oil imports are crucial for maintaining affordable and stable fuel prices for its 1.4 billion citizens, asserting that India, like any major economy, has the right to protect its national interests.

This latest exchange signals a significant escalation in trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington, with the potential to affect billions in bilateral trade. While India has not yet announced any countermeasures, it indicated that it will continue to source energy based on economic requirements rather than political pressure.
