Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani Takes Office as India’s New Chief of Defence Staff

New Delhi, May 31, 2026 — Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd), a distinguished officer with over four decades of service, has officially taken over as India’s third Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) as of Sunday. He follows General Anil Chauhan, who completed his term on May 30, 2026.

This transition signifies a pivotal change in the leadership of India’s military forces. General Subramani will also undertake the role of Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs for the Government of India. A ceremonial Tri-Services Guard of Honour at the South Block lawns in New Delhi marked the occasion. In a tribute to those who have served and sacrificed, General Subramani laid a wreath at the National War Memorial.

The Government of India had announced the appointment on May 9, 2026, designating Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani as the new CDS from the day he assumed office. General Anil Chauhan, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, concluded his service after being the second CDS since September 2022.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that this appointment reflects the government’s dedication to enhancing tri-service integration and implementing structural reforms within the armed forces. General Subramani’s substantial operational experience, especially along India’s northern and western frontiers, is seen as crucial in steering these efforts.

Born on July 21, 1965, General Subramani is an alumnus of the 67th course of the National Defence Academy and the 77th course of the Indian Military Academy. He earned a Master of Arts from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from the University of Madras. His education also includes time at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK and the National Defence College in New Delhi.

Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985, General Subramani has held numerous command, staff, and instructional roles. Early in his career, he was involved in counter-insurgency operations in Assam, leading the 16th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. His career also includes serving as a Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan and key positions at Army Headquarters and Eastern Command.

As a Brigadier, he led the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir. Upon promotion to Major General, he commanded the 17th Mountain Division in Sikkim and later served as Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

Promoted to Lieutenant General on February 3, 2020, he commanded the Uttar Bharat Area and later the II Corps, oriented towards the western border. He served as Chief of Staff at Northern Command before leading the Central Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief from March 2023 to June 2024. He then became the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025. Post-retirement, he was appointed Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat from September 1, 2025.

General Subramani has been honored with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2024), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2020), Sena Medal (2005), and Vishisht Seva Medal (2015). His accolades include various campaign and service medals, such as the Special Service Medal, Siachen Glacier Medal, Operation Vijay Medal, Operation Parakram Medal, and long-service medals.

In his inaugural address as CDS, General Subramani expressed his gratitude for the responsibility entrusted to him and committed to the Prime Minister’s vision of JAI — Jointness, Atma Nirbharta (self-reliance), and Innovation.

He stated: “Strengthening jointness, synergy and integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force would remain a key focus area.” He emphasised accelerating the development, induction, and integration of indigenous weapons and defense technologies, highlighting self-reliance as a cornerstone of national security. Innovation, he noted, would drive capability development through collaboration with industry, academia, startups, and the research ecosystem.

General Subramani acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors, particularly the late General Bipin Rawat, India’s first CDS, and General Anil Chauhan in advancing military integration and reform. He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while prioritizing the welfare of service members, veterans, and Veer Naaris.

This appointment comes at a critical time as India seeks to implement significant defense reforms, including the establishment of integrated theatre commands and improved tri-service cooperation. As the head of the Department of Military Affairs and the principal military advisor to the Defence Minister, the CDS is central to formulating policy, developing capabilities, and coordinating operations across the three services.

General Subramani is recognized as a strategic, forward-thinking leader, adept with technology, and known for decisive leadership, professional empathy, and a results-driven approach. His comprehensive understanding of operational matters on both the western and northern borders, alongside extensive experience in counter-insurgency and mountain warfare, positions him well to tackle contemporary security challenges.

Simultaneously, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been named the next Chief of Naval Staff, marking the latest changes in high-level military leadership.

General N.S. Raja Subramani's tenure as the third Chief of Defence Staff represents a new era in India’s defense leadership. His track record of operational excellence, strategic insight, and commitment to joint operations is expected to drive the ongoing transformation of the Indian Armed Forces towards enhanced integration, self-reliance, and technological progress.

As General Subramani takes on this vital role, the nation extends its best wishes for his leadership during a period of evolving defense strategies in response to global geopolitical developments.
