Assam Regiment Young Officers Partake in Orientation at Kohima Garrison, Nagaland
Kohima, July 23, 2026: On July 22, 2026, the Assam Rifles hosted an orientation visit for six newly commissioned Young Officers from the Assam Regiment at the Kohima Garrison in Nagaland. The event aimed to provide these officers with firsthand exposure to the operational environment, storied military heritage, and enduring professional ethos of the Force.
This initiative sought to familiarize the young officers with the operational duties, traditions, and legacy of the Assam Rifles, which holds the distinction of being India's oldest paramilitary force. The program offered valuable insights into the Force’s crucial role in safeguarding the nation's frontiers and maintaining peace in the Northeast region.
During the program, the officers participated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Assam Regiment War Memorial, where they paid homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. This ceremony underscored the Regiment's rich tradition of courage, honour, and selfless service, reinforcing the values that future military leaders are expected to uphold.
A significant aspect of the visit was the interaction with Maj Gen H. S. Mavi, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North), and other senior officers of the Assam Rifles. The young officers gained valuable insights into the Force's operational legacy, leadership philosophy, and professional standards. Senior commanders shared their experiences and emphasized integrity, operational excellence, and the commitment required to operate in challenging environments.
The officers also visited the Kohima War Cemetery, where they learned about the history and military significance of the Battle of Kohima, a pivotal engagement during the Second World War. This visit allowed them to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of soldiers in that battle, underscoring the importance of preserving military history and honoring past servicemen.
The program also included a visit to Kisama Heritage Village, where the officers experienced the vibrant cultural traditions, customs, and heritage of Nagaland. This visit enhanced their understanding of the region's unique social and cultural landscape, an important aspect for officers expected to serve in the Northeast.
