Kareena Kaushik Elevated to Head Constable Following Remarkable Wushu Achievements

Head Constable Kareena Kaushik of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has been officially awarded the Chevron of Head Constable in recognition of her exceptional service and achievements in wushu. This promotion, which takes effect on May 18, 2026, follows her recent bronze medal victory at the 11th Sanda World Cup in Macau and her silver medal performance at the 17th World Wushu Championships in Brazil last year.

The announcement was made by the 25th Battalion of the SSB, which also organized a ceremonial welcome for her at Indira Gandhi International Airport when she returned from Macau. Officials praised her discipline, dedication, and her success in raising the profile of the SSB Central Wushu Team internationally.

In September 2025, the 21-year-old from Jhajjar district, Haryana, debuted internationally at the World Wushu Championships in Brasília, Brazil. Competing in the women's 60 kg Sanda category, she defeated Nathalia Briquesi Silva of Brazil in the semifinal before earning a silver medal in the final against China's Xiaowei Wu, who is the Asian Games champion.

Kareena's performance was part of a historic achievement for Indian wushu. Along with Aparna Dahiya and Shivani Prajapati, she became one of the first three Indian women to compete in the gold-medal rounds of Sanda at the World Championships. India won four medals in the Sanda events at the competition.

Building on this success, Kareena Kaushik secured a bronze medal in the women's 60 kg category at the 11th Sanda World Cup in Macau, China, held from May 13 to 15, 2026. Her consistent performances against formidable international opponents have solidified her position as a key athlete in India's Sanda programme.

Kareena Kaushik began her wushu training at the age of 13 during school physical training sessions focused on self-defense. Inspired by her elder brother Hrithik, who is also a wushu player, she gradually developed a passion for the sport.

"I was 13 when I enrolled in wushu classes in school. I got inspired by my elder brother Hrithik, who is also a wushu player. I joined the sport to learn the art of self-defense and gradually developed a liking for the discipline," she has stated in earlier interviews.

Initially, her parents had reservations about her pursuit of the sport, but they later fully supported her. Her early success in school competitions helped build family confidence in her sporting ambitions.

As a member of the SSB, she has balanced operational duties with demanding athletic training, including national camps and ranking tournaments tied to major events like the Asian Games.

The leadership of the SSB has publicly congratulated Head Constable Kareena Kaushik on both her sporting achievements and her promotion. They described her accomplishments as a source of pride for both the force and the nation. Her rapid progression from Constable to Head Constable highlights the organization's commitment to supporting personnel who excel in sports.

With her recent promotion and ongoing training, Kareena Kaushik is expected to play a central role in India's preparations for future international competitions. She has expressed her determination to strive for gold medals at the highest levels.

Her journey exemplifies the growing synergy between India’s paramilitary forces and elite sports, as well as the rising prominence of female athletes in Sanda wushu on the global stage.
