Judge Advocate Advance Course Concludes at Institute of Military Law, New Delhi
The Judge Advocate Advance Course at the Institute of Military Law (IML), New Delhi, concluded on 11 August 2026 with a valedictory ceremony led by Hon’ble Mr Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, marking the completion of advanced legal training for officers drawn from India’s armed forces, security organisations and the Nepal Army.
The programme brought together officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard and Border Security Force, along with one officer from the Nepal Army. Designed to strengthen specialised legal expertise, the course focused on advanced concepts of military law and allied legal frameworks relevant to uniformed services and military justice systems.
At the closing ceremony, Justice Bishnoi felicitated the awardees and highlighted the importance of specialised legal training in enabling the effective functioning of the armed forces and other uniformed organisations. The event marked the formal end of a course aimed at preparing officers to handle the legal dimensions of service life, military justice and related institutional responsibilities with greater professional competence.
The training offered participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the legal systems and principles that govern military and allied organisations. Beyond classroom instruction, the composition of the course itself — spanning multiple services and security bodies — helped widen inter-service exposure and encouraged a broader appreciation of the legal issues encountered across the security establishment.
Maj Prashanth K Mukundan was adjudged the Best Student of the course, an award that recognised his performance during the training programme. The honour reflected his grasp of the advanced subjects covered and his overall professional standard during the course.
The Institute of Military Law, which hosted the programme in New Delhi, plays a central role in delivering specialised legal education and training for personnel dealing with military justice and related legal matters. Courses such as the Judge Advocate Advance Course are intended to develop legal officers who are equipped to provide informed advice and assist commanders and formations on matters involving military and allied law.
The inclusion of an officer from the Nepal Army added an international element to the course and created space for professional interaction and the exchange of perspectives on military and allied legal issues. That cross-border participation also broadened the scope of discussions within a programme otherwise centred on India’s armed forces and security organisations.
The completion of the course reflects the continued focus on professional development, legal awareness and institutional capacity building across India’s military and security framework. By bringing together officers from different services and organisations for advanced legal instruction, the programme reinforced the importance of knowledgeable legal support within operational and administrative structures.
