IWI Set to Supply 40,000 Light Machine Guns to India in Early 2024

Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), a prominent Israeli defense manufacturer, is scheduled to begin delivering the first set of 40,000 light machine guns (LMGs) to India early next year. This delivery signifies a significant advancement in the defense cooperation between India and Israel, as well as India's ongoing efforts to modernize its security forces.

Shuki Schwartz, CEO of IWI, confirmed that the multi-year contract for the LMGs, signed last year, has successfully passed all necessary tests, trials, and received government approvals. With a production license now secured, the company is poised to commence deliveries at the beginning of the next year. The supply agreement is set to span five years, although Schwartz mentioned the possibility of accelerating the delivery schedule.

In addition to the LMG agreement, IWI is nearing the conclusion of a substantial contract to supply India with 170,000 next-generation Close Quarters Battle (CQB) carbines. Under this procurement plan, Bharat Forge is the primary bidder for 60% of the requirement, while IWI plans to supply the remaining 40% through PLR Systems, its joint venture with the Adani Group. The contract is in its pre-signing phase and is anticipated to be finalized by the end of this year or early 2026.

IWI is also considering a deeper technological partnership with Indian entities through Arbel technology, a computerized weapon enhancement system. This advanced system utilizes algorithms to determine when a soldier is accurately aiming at a target before enabling the shot. Should this system gain approval, it is expected to be co-produced in India through PLR Systems, further enhancing domestic manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

Schwartz emphasized IWI's enduring relationship with India's Ministry of Home Affairs and various security agencies. The company has delivered pistols, rifles, and machine guns via multiple contracts over the years, with the capacity to fulfill annual delivery demands reaching tens of thousands of units to meet shifting operational needs.

In response to concerns about global supply chain disruptions, Schwartz highlighted that Israel has developed a robust defense manufacturing ecosystem, capable of independently supporting partner nations even in the face of restrictions or export bans by some European countries.

These initiatives represent a significant boost to India's defense readiness and indigenization efforts, as ongoing collaboration with IWI continues to expand local production capabilities and introduce advanced technologies to address future security challenges.
