IPS trainee Uday Krishna Reddy attempts suicide in Hyderabad amid sexual harassment allegations by batchmate
Hyderabad: A trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Shivarampally attempted suicide on Monday, 20 July 2026, two days after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him for allegedly sexually harassing, assaulting, and intimidating a woman batchmate.
Police said Uday Krishna Reddy tried to harm himself at his brother’s residence in Moti Nagar. He was rushed to Jayanthi Multi-Speciality Hospital, where his condition was reported as stable. Officials from the SR Nagar police station confirmed the incident and his treatment status.
FIR and allegations
Attapur police registered the FIR on Saturday, 18 July 2026, based on a complaint by a woman IPS trainee (referred to in some reports as Suma or Sumah). The case invokes Sections 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 127(2), 115(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering sexual harassment, assault, criminal intimidation, stalking, and outraging the modesty of a woman. Sections 66E and 67A of the Information Technology Act, relating to violation of privacy and electronic transmission of sexually explicit material, were also applied.
According to the complaint, the alleged harassment began around 23 June 2026. The woman trainee accused Reddy of sending sexually abusive messages on WhatsApp and making sexist remarks about her in front of other trainees. She further alleged that he spread false rumours about her personal life, claiming without basis that she was in an illicit relationship with another trainee, and repeatedly pressured her to admit to it while using derogatory language.
The complaint details more serious claims of escalation. On 8 July, Reddy allegedly coerced her into unlocking her phone and showing him personal messages, later taking the device to his room and forcing her to reveal the password. On the night of 9 July, he is accused of confining her to his room, grabbing her by the hair, attempting to strangle her, holding a knife to her neck, preventing her from leaving, and throwing packets of condoms at her. Further assault is alleged on the morning of 10 July, along with groping and inappropriate touching. She also claimed he secretly recorded a private video of her without consent and sent it to her husband, while circulating false information within the academy to damage her reputation.
Police have initiated an investigation. No official response from Reddy or the SVPNPA was immediately available in reports.
Background of the accused officer
Uday Krishna Reddy hails from Ullapalem (also spelled Woollapalem or Ullipalem) village in Singarayakonda mandal of Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh. He lost his mother at a young age and later his father; he was raised by his grandmother Ramanamma, who sold vegetables to support the family.
He joined the Andhra Pradesh Police as a constable in 2013 (selected in 2012) and served for about five years at stations including Gudluru and Ramayapatnam Marine Police Station. In 2018, after public humiliation by a senior circle inspector in front of colleagues—reportedly for preparing for civil services exams—he resigned to focus full-time on UPSC preparation.
He secured All India Rank 780 in the Civil Services Examination 2023 and joined the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). Determined to join the IPS, he reappeared and achieved All India Rank 350 in CSE 2024, securing an IPS allocation. He was undergoing training at SVPNPA at the time of the incident.
Current status
Reddy remains under medical care with a stable condition. The investigation into the harassment allegations continues, with police stating it is at an early stage. The case has drawn attention given the prestige of the National Police Academy and the serious nature of the charges involving trainees who will eventually hold senior policing positions.
