IPS officer Anurag Sujania resigns days after transfer from Sagar SP post

Bhopal, November 3, 2026: Indian Police Service officer Anurag Sujania, a 2014-batch officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has resigned from the service, citing personal reasons, just days after being shifted from his post as Superintendent of Police, Sagar.

Sujania submitted his resignation on November 2, four days after the state government issued an order transferring him from Sagar to the Police Headquarters in Bhopal as Assistant Inspector General. He was replaced in Sagar by Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, a 2016-batch IPS officer. The transfer was part of a wider administrative reshuffle that also involved the Collectors and SPs of Sagar and Dewas districts.

The reshuffle came in the wake of the Banda hooch tragedy in Sagar district in early September 2026, when at least 16 people were officially confirmed dead after consuming illegally manufactured poisonous liquor, suspected to be contaminated with methanol.

At the time of his transfer, Sujania was overseeing the investigation into the incident. People familiar with developments in the police establishment said the timing of the move had caused discontent, though the officer himself formally attributed his resignation to personal reasons. He could not be contacted for comment.

Originally from Rajasthan, Sujania holds an MTech degree. He joined the IPS on December 2, 2014, and was confirmed in service in December 2017. Over the course of his career, he has served as Superintendent of Police in Tikamgarh, Mandsaur, Morena and Sagar districts, and as Sub-Divisional Officer of Police in Karera. He had been posted as Sagar SP for around six months before the transfer order; before that, he was serving as AIG at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal.

The resignation is yet to receive a formal decision from the state government. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was scheduled to meet senior police officials at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal on the evening of November 3, following the development.

The move has drawn attention within the police administration amid continuing probes into the spurious liquor cases in Sagar and reports of similar incidents in Dewas.
