New Delhi, January 24, 2026 – The Indian Armed Forces are preparing to showcase the advanced S-400 air defense missile system for the first time during the 77th Republic Day parade on January 26 at Kartavya Path. This debut will occur as part of the Department of Military Affairs' tri-services tableau, titled "Operation Sindoor: Victory Through Jointness," which underscores the seamless integration and operational successes of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The S-400, a Russian-origin long-range surface-to-air missile system, has been hailed as a game-changer in India's defense capabilities. Acquired to bolster integrated air defense networks, it demonstrated its prowess during Operation Sindoor, a targeted military operation conducted in early May 2025. The operation was initiated in response to the April 22, 2025, terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to dismantle terror infrastructure across the border. During the four-day conflict, the S-400 successfully neutralized five to six Pakistani fighter aircraft and one surveillance plane at ranges exceeding 300 kilometers, marking some of the longest engagements in modern aerial warfare. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh confirmed these achievements in August 2025, emphasizing the system's role in safeguarding Indian airspace and enabling decisive strikes deep into adversary territory.

The tableau will present a dynamic, sequential depiction of tri-service synergy in contemporary warfare, aligning with India's evolving military doctrine of precision, rapid response, and self-reliance under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat @2047. It begins with the Indian Navy establishing maritime dominance, followed by the Army's calibrated firepower using assets like the M777 ultra-light howitzers and the Akash air defense system for layered protection. The narrative then shifts to precision strikes, featuring unmanned systems such as the HAROP loitering munition to disable enemy radars, Rafale fighters deploying SCALP missiles for surgical attacks on terror sites, and SU-30 MKI aircraft launching BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles against hardened targets. The sequence culminates with the S-400 executing a 350-kilometer engagement to eliminate an adversary's airborne early-warning platform, symbolizing India's "detect, decide, and destroy" superiority.

In addition to the S-400, the parade will highlight other indigenous and advanced systems, including the Bhairav and Shaktibaan unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), and various mock-ups of key weaponry. These elements reflect India's commitment to fused intelligence, minimal collateral damage, and indigenous defense innovation, sending a clear message that acts of terrorism will invite swift and overwhelming retaliation.

The overall Republic Day celebrations will feature 30 tableaux, with 17 representing states and Union Territories and 13 from central ministries, departments, and services. Themes for the event include "Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram," commemorating 150 years of the national song, and "Samriddhi ka Mantra: Aatmanirbhar Bharat," showcasing progress in self-reliance and cultural heritage. Approximately 6,050 military personnel will participate, with Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar leading the parade for the fourth consecutive year.

This parade, the first since Operation Sindoor, not only celebrates India's military advancements but also reinforces its strategic posture in regional security dynamics. The inclusion of the S-400 serves as a testament to the armed forces' readiness and the nation's resolve to protect its sovereignty through integrated, high-technology operations.
