Indian Prime Minister Modi Receives Cyprus' Top Civilian Award on Landmark Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Cyprus's highest civilian honor, the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III', during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. This event marked a historic occasion as it was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean nation.

The award was bestowed upon Modi by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, acknowledging his efforts in strengthening the bilateral relations between India and Cyprus. Expressing his gratitude, the Indian Prime Minister shared on social media platform X that he was humbled by the honor and dedicated it to the friendship between the two countries.

Upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace, PM Modi was greeted with a ceremonial welcome from President Christodoulides, following a warm reception at Larnaca International Airport on Sunday. In Limassol, members of the Indian community welcomed him, highlighting the strong people-to-people connections between the two nations.

During the visit, the leaders introduced their respective delegations and engaged in discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in trade, energy, innovation, and technology.

As part of their engagements, PM Modi and President Christodoulides also met with prominent CEOs from both countries to explore opportunities for deeper commercial partnerships. Modi shared on X about their discussions to invigorate business linkages and highlighted India's reform progress over the past decade.

The Cyprus Presidency emphasized the importance of the visit, describing it as the onset of a “new era of strategic partnership” between India and Cyprus.

Before departing, PM Modi stressed the importance of Cyprus as a close ally and strategic partner for India within the Mediterranean and EU regions. He viewed the visit as a chance to enhance historical ties and expand cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and technology.

The Cyprus visit is the initial part of PM Modi's tour, which will also take him to Canada and Croatia.
