Indian Navy to Commission 'Ikshak', Enhancing Indigenous Survey Infrastructure

The Indian Navy is poised to induct Ikshak, the third ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) class, in a ceremony scheduled for November 6, 2025, at the Naval Base in Kochi. This vessel will be the first of its class to be stationed under the Southern Naval Command, with Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, officiating the event.

Constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. in Kolkata, Ikshak showcases India's increasing capability in indigenous shipbuilding. The vessel boasts over 80% indigenous components, marking a triumph for the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and demonstrating successful collaboration between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Named 'Ikshak', which translates to 'Guide' in Sanskrit, the ship embodies its mission to provide precise guidance and direction in India's maritime landscape. It is engineered to perform extensive hydrographic surveys along the coast and in deeper waters, crucial for the secure navigation of ports, harbors, and channels.

Equipped for Excellence

Fitted with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic technology, Ikshak includes a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs). Additionally, the ship is equipped with a helicopter deck, enhancing its ability to execute multi-faceted missions.

A Symbol of Maritime Self-Reliance

The introduction of Ikshak marks a pivotal step in the Indian Navy's efforts to bolster its surveying and charting capabilities. As a representation of indigenous capability, advanced technology, and maritime leadership, the vessel will be instrumental in protecting India's maritime boundaries and ensuring navigational safety in regional waters.

With Ikshak's entry into service, the Indian Navy is advancing towards achieving new heights in hydrographic proficiency, reinforcing India's dedication to technological progress and maritime autonomy.
