Indian Navy Chief Updates on MH-60R Helicopter Induction Progress, Stresses Importance of Anti-Submarine Warfare

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi has provided an update on the Indian Navy's efforts to integrate the MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, underscoring the importance of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) as a key operational focus for the navy.

In a discussion with ANI, Admiral Tripathi revealed that the initial agreement involved procuring 24 MH-60R Romeo-class multi-role helicopters from the United States. The process of delivery and integration is proceeding in a structured manner through phased induction, training programs, and the inclusion of India-Unique Equipment (IUE).

According to Admiral Tripathi, 15 of the 24 helicopters have been delivered to India and are now being incorporated into front-line naval operations. He mentioned that three more helicopters are anticipated to arrive soon.

He also mentioned that three helicopters are stationed in the United States for the ongoing training of Indian Navy aircrew, while another three are undergoing evaluations with India-Unique Equipment before their official handover upon successful testing.

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that the induction is being executed in phases to facilitate a smooth integration of personnel, equipment, and operational capabilities.

He described the MH-60R helicopters as essential force multipliers, highlighting their role in bolstering maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue missions, and overall fleet support operations.

The MH-60R Seahawk is recognized as one of the most advanced naval helicopters globally and significantly boosts the Indian Navy's ability to detect, track, and engage submarines in the Indian Ocean Region.

Admiral Tripathi reiterated that anti-submarine warfare remains a top operational priority for the service, given the evolving maritime security landscape and increased underwater activity in the region.

The ongoing induction of the MH-60R fleet is poised to greatly enhance the Indian Navy's operational capabilities, thereby strengthening its capacity to safeguard India's maritime interests throughout the Indo-Pacific.
