Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Returns Home Following Historic ISS Mission

Indian astronaut and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla experienced an emotional homecoming on Wednesday as he reunited with his family after completing an 18-day mission on the International Space Station (ISS). This mission, part of the private Axiom-4 mission, represents a significant achievement in India's space exploration history.

Shukla, who took on the role of mission pilot, became the first Indian to travel to the ISS. He embarked on this journey on June 25, 2025, with a team of four aboard a SpaceX spacecraft launched by Axiom Space, based in Texas. The crew spent a total of 20 days in space, dedicating 18 days to research aboard the ISS.

Throughout the mission, Shukla was involved in pioneering microgravity experiments. His research focused on various aspects, including muscle regeneration, the growth of algae and microbes, crop viability, cognitive performance, and the behavior of cyanobacteria in space. These efforts were part of a global initiative to enhance space biology and deep-space exploration technologies.

His wife, Kamna, who has been in the United States since his training commenced, expressed relief and happiness upon his safe return. "Now that Shubhanshu has safely returned, our immediate focus will be on his rehabilitation and ensuring he smoothly readjusts to life on Earth. For us, simply being reunited after this incredible journey is a celebration in itself,” she shared with reporters.

The mission has garnered widespread acclaim across India. On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed a resolution congratulating Shukla, describing his accomplishment as a "moment of pride, glory, and joy" that underscores India's burgeoning reputation in space science and innovation.

"The Cabinet joins the nation in celebrating the return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to Earth, following the successful completion of his historic 18-day mission aboard the International Space Station," stated Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as he read the Cabinet's announcement.

Shukla's success also drew commendations from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who praised the state's youth for their contributions to India's expanding achievements in space research and innovation.

The Axiom-4 mission, conducted in partnership with SpaceX, represents the fourth private astronaut mission to the ISS and is integral to Axiom Space’s vision of creating the world’s first commercial space station. Shukla’s involvement has prominently positioned India in the realm of global space exploration.

This mission marks a significant leap forward for India in the field of human spaceflight, as ISRO prepares for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, which aims to launch Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit using an entirely indigenous platform.
