Golden Arrow Division GOC Flags Off Gunners’ Mount Kamet Expedition for Artillery Bicentenary

The General Officer Commanding of the Golden Arrow Division has flagged off the Gunners Mountaineering Expedition to Mount Kamet, bringing the Regiment of Artillery’s bicentenary celebrations into one of the most demanding high-altitude environments in the Indian Himalayas.

At 7,756 metres, Mount Kamet in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas is among the tougher peaks in the region. Its height, harsh weather, difficult terrain and thin air make any summit attempt a severe test of endurance, technical ability, mental strength and coordinated team effort.

The expedition is being undertaken as a tribute to 200 years of service and sacrifice by the Regiment of Artillery. For the participating personnel, the climb is intended to reflect the values long associated with the Gunners while placing them in an environment where stamina, discipline and judgment will be tested at every stage.

According to the account, the mission is meant to embody the defining qualities of the Gunner fraternity — courage, precision, discipline, teamwork and commitment to mission accomplishment. The participants will be expected to rely on those attributes as they move through a difficult Himalayan setting that demands constant coordination and careful execution.

The General Officer Commanding encouraged the expedition members as they set out on the mountaineering task. The outing is also expected to give the personnel an opportunity to demonstrate both physical and psychological resilience in an extreme mountain environment.

Mount Kamet has a history of attracting Indian Army mountaineering teams. In 2018, an Indian Army expedition to the peak was conducted under the Army Adventure Wing, and Army mountaineers have also successfully attempted the mountain on other occasions.

For the Regiment of Artillery, the expedition carries added meaning because it is part of the bicentenary year celebrations. The climb links the regiment’s long military legacy with present-day demands that call for adaptability, endurance and specialised skills.

The challenge will also test whether the team can function as a cohesive unit in severe conditions, where success depends on planning, physical preparation, acclimatisation and disciplined execution. In such expeditions, every stage of the climb requires close attention to both individual performance and collective coordination.

Beyond the climb itself, the expedition reflects the Indian Army’s broader use of adventure activities to build leadership, resilience, teamwork and confidence among its personnel.
