Indian Army to Procure 300 More Indigenous Dhanush Howitzers

The Indian Army is set to bolster its artillery strength with a new order for 300 domestically manufactured Dhanush 155 mm/45 calibre howitzers, according to sources in the defence sector.

This procurement initiative, pending approval from the Defence Ministry, aims to establish approximately 15 regiments outfitted with these locally produced artillery guns. This order follows the initial deployment of over 110 Dhanush guns into active service.

The Dhanush howitzer, developed from the technology transferred from the Bofors guns acquired by India in the 1980s, has been produced by state-run defence manufacturers. The Indian Army has already integrated about four regiments of the Dhanush guns, with two more regiments anticipated to be inducted soon.

Capable of firing 155 mm ammunition, the Dhanush system can utilize a Bi-Modular Charge System (BMCS), enhancing its range and operational versatility. The howitzer features modern technology, including an inertial navigation-based sighting system, auto-laying functionality, onboard ballistic computation, and a day-and-night direct firing system.

Additionally, the artillery platform is equipped with a self-propulsion unit, facilitating improved mobility and deployment in challenging terrains, such as mountainous areas.

The inclusion of the Dhanush gun system is a significant component of the Indian Army’s comprehensive artillery modernisation effort. It complements other artillery systems like the K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzer and the M-777 ultra-light howitzer. This move also supports India’s strategic aim of enhancing defence self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on foreign military hardware.
