Indian Army Proposes Acquisition of 300+ K9 Vajra Howitzers in Rs 23,000 Crore Modernisation Drive

The Indian Army is set to seek government approval for a major artillery modernization project, which aims to acquire over 300 additional K9 Vajra-T self-propelled tracked howitzers. This significant procurement, valued at approximately Rs 23,000 crore, is expected to be presented to the Defence Procurement Board (DPB) this week.

Sources within the defense sector suggest that this initiative is poised to expand the Army’s long-range precision firepower, specifically to meet operational needs along the western front with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Background and Current Inventory

The K9 Vajra-T is an Indian adaptation of the South Korean K9 Thunder 155mm/52-calibre self-propelled howitzer. It is manufactured domestically by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) through a technology transfer agreement with South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace, incorporating significant indigenous content.

The Indian Army currently has around 100 K9 Vajra-T units. The first contract for 100 howitzers, signed in 2017 for approximately Rs 4,500 crore, was completed ahead of schedule by 2021. These systems were primarily deployed in the desert regions along the western border. A subsequent order for another 100 guns, valued at around Rs 7,629 crore, was approved in late 2023/2024.

If the present proposal is sanctioned, the total number of K9 Vajra units ordered by India would surpass 500, significantly expanding the Army’s self-propelled artillery capabilities and increasing L&T’s production mandate beyond 500 units.

Capabilities of the K9 Vajra-T

The K9 Vajra-T is a versatile, tracked 155mm/52-calibre self-propelled howitzer, capable of targeting at distances beyond 40 kilometres. Its key operational features include:

  • It possesses a rapid "shoot-and-scoot" ability, allowing for swift relocation after firing to evade enemy counter-battery attacks.
  • The howitzer boasts high mobility and armored protection, making it suitable for operations in both desert and mountainous terrains.
  • It has proven effective in extreme environments, with successful cold-weather trials conducted in Ladakh.
  • The system provides robust support to fast-moving armoured units and delivers sustained firepower across diverse operational scenarios.

The howitzer's operational reliability has been affirmed through its deployment in Rajasthan's desert sectors and during high-altitude standoffs in eastern Ladakh, particularly during the 2020 tensions with China.

Strategic Context and Rationale

The proposed acquisition is viewed by defense planners as a crucial step in bolstering India's artillery capabilities amidst evolving security challenges. The focus is on enhancing responsive, mobile, and long-range precision strike abilities for operations across both desert and high-altitude regions.

This proposal is informed by recent operational experiences, emphasizing the need for high-intensity precision firepower. It aligns with the Army's broader artillery modernization strategy, which includes the induction of Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS), Dhanush guns, and updated Pinaka multi-barrel rocket systems.

Officials highlight the K9 Vajra-T's proven performance in both western and northern theaters, which has solidified confidence in the platform. The additional units aim to fill capability gaps, improve operational readiness, and provide a strong deterrent against adversarial military advancements.

Path Forward

The proposal's submission to the DPB this week marks the initiation of the formal approval process. Once cleared, a contract is expected to be awarded to L&T, continuing the successful model of licensed production and technology integration within India.

Approval of this procurement would greatly enhance the Indian Army’s capability for precise, sustained, and mobile fire support in its key operational areas. It highlights the ongoing modernization of the artillery arm with proven, adaptable platforms designed to meet the requirements of both current and future conflicts.

This development aligns with India's ongoing emphasis on strengthening defense capabilities and achieving self-reliance in essential defense technologies, addressing the unique terrain and threat scenarios along the western and northern borders.
