Indian Army Major Shubham Saini Dies in Chakrata Road Accident
In a tragic event, Major Shubham Saini of the Indian Army has died in a road accident in Uttarakhand's Chakrata area after his vehicle fell into a deep ravine, according to officials on Sunday.
The 27-year-old officer sustained critical injuries on Saturday evening when his car reportedly lost control on the Dehradun–Chakrata road near Bungalow No. 10, plunging approximately 50 metres into a gorge. Army personnel promptly responded, conducting a rescue operation to retrieve Major Saini from the ravine and transport him to a military hospital. Despite extensive medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Major Shubham Saini was stationed at the headquarters of the 2/2 Battalion in Chakrata. Originally from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, he began his military career as a Lieutenant in 2019 and was later promoted to Major. Senior officers remembered him as a disciplined, responsible, and highly skilled officer with an exemplary service record.
Witnesses reported that the weather conditions in the Chakrata cantonment area were normal when the accident occurred. However, the Dehradun–Chakrata stretch is notorious for its sharp turns and challenging terrain, where accidents are not rare. Initial reports suggest the car lost balance on a turn, leading to its fall into the gorge and severe vehicle damage.
On Sunday morning, the post-mortem and other legal procedures were completed, after which the Indian Army handed over Major Saini’s remains to his family. The news of his untimely passing has brought a sense of mourning to his native village in Meerut, where family, friends, and community members grieve the loss of a promising young officer.
The Indian Army expressed heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, honoring Major Shubham Saini’s commitment and service to the nation.
