Indian Army Integrates AI Technology for Enhanced Border Security in Kashmir

The Indian Army has significantly advanced its border security operations by implementing artificial intelligence (AI)-powered surveillance systems in North and South Kashmir. This initiative, spearheaded by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Northern Command, represents a pivotal shift in India’s counter-infiltration and intelligence capabilities in the area.

Since taking over the command in May 2025, Lt Gen Sharma has leveraged his extensive background in information warfare, honed during his tenure as Director General of Information Warfare, to introduce automated software and intelligent monitoring tools in the forward areas under the Chinar Corps. These systems are designed to enhance threat detection, monitor suspicious activities, and oversee infrastructure developments along the sensitive borders with Pakistan and China.

In a recent operational review, the Indian Army showcased the new AI surveillance technology in a live demonstration. These advanced systems, featuring real-time video analysis, automated target tracking, and vehicle recognition, are comparable to global military innovations like the U.S. Department of Defense’s Project MAVEN, which reportedly reduced video analysis time by 70% as per a 2021 report.

The AI-driven transformation comes at a crucial time, amid rising geopolitical tensions and the need for enhanced situational awareness in volatile areas such as Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. This deployment bolsters India's capacity to detect cross-border infiltration and maintain uninterrupted surveillance in high-altitude and challenging terrains.

During his visit, Lt Gen Sharma, with prior experience commanding the 80 Infantry Brigade in J&K and serving as Director General Military Operations, engaged with troops, highlighting the significance of high readiness and the evolving role of technology in contemporary warfare. He praised the ongoing tri-service preparedness exercises by the Chinar Corps, including the helicopter-borne joint drills in sub-zero Kashmir conditions held in 2021, which enhance rapid response capabilities across various domains.

The newly implemented surveillance systems have been strategically positioned in several key areas of Kashmir, significantly enhancing India’s defense posture. These AI-powered tools not only improve operational efficiency but also alleviate the human workload associated with manual monitoring and analysis.

As the Indian Army continues to integrate emerging technologies, this initiative underscores its dedication to maintaining a secure and technologically advanced defense framework.
