Indian Army Expands Arsenal with Additional Order of 450 Nagastra-1R Loitering Munitions

The Indian Army has decided to expand its arsenal by ordering an additional 450 Nagastra-1R loitering munitions from Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited. This decision reflects a growing confidence in domestically developed defense technologies. The latest procurement builds on the initial batch of 480 units delivered in June 2024 under the Army’s Emergency Procurement Powers, highlighting the system's proven operational effectiveness.

Manufactured by Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL), a branch of Solar Industries, the Nagastra-1R, often referred to as a "suicide drone," is engineered for precision strikes with minimal collateral damage. It features GPS-enabled guidance, boasting a circular error probable (CEP) of only 2 meters, enabling it to accurately target and neutralize enemy assets such as bunkers, vehicles, and radar systems.

The loitering munition is equipped with a 360-degree gimbal camera, providing comprehensive situational awareness and reconnaissance. Additionally, it offers thermal imaging capabilities, facilitating effective operations during night missions. A notable feature of the drone is its ability to abort missions mid-flight and safely recover using a parachute system, allowing for resource conservation when necessary.

More than 80% of the components used in the Nagastra-1R are sourced locally, supporting India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives. The system has undergone rigorous testing in diverse terrains, including Ladakh and Babina, successfully passing all operational evaluations and pre-delivery inspections.

With this new order, the Indian Army seeks to enhance its tactical strike capabilities, lessen reliance on foreign systems, and advance its drone warfare strategy. The ongoing induction of the Nagastra-1R signifies a crucial move in India's efforts to emerge as a global leader in advanced, self-sufficient defense manufacturing.
