Indian Army Completes Record-Breaking 8-Hour Hot Air Balloon Flight in Expedition
The Indian Army has successfully completed a significant adventure aviation feat with its Hot Air Ballooning Expedition from Bhopal to Pune. The journey, spanning over 750 kilometers across two states, concluded today. This expedition was organized under the Indian Army Adventure Wing by the Hot Air Ballooning Node at EME Centre, Bhopal, and it has set a national record for the longest non-stop hot air balloon flight in India.
Beginning on November 30, 2025, the team traversed various terrains, including the Narmada Valley in Madhya Pradesh and the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, making stops at Mhow, Sambhajinagar, and Ahilyanagar. At each stop, Army personnel engaged with local youth, introducing them to hot air ballooning and sharing the Indian Army’s values of adventure, resilience, and discipline.
The expedition's highlight was an 8-hour and 44-minute non-stop hot air balloon flight, which has been recognized by the Asian Book of Records as the longest of its kind in India. This achievement underscores the team's exceptional endurance, technical proficiency, and effective coordination.
Apart from its aviation achievements, the expedition also served as an outreach effort. The team conducted motivational talks, demonstrations, and interactive sessions with students and aspirants, sparking interest in adventure sports and highlighting opportunities within the Armed Forces.
Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, commended the team for their determination and record-breaking performance. He emphasized that such initiatives not only foster a culture of adventure within the Armed Forces but also create valuable connections with the country's youth.
Through its combination of aviation excellence, youth engagement, and a record-setting performance, the Indian Army’s Hot Air Ballooning Expedition represents a landmark initiative that continues to enhance India’s adventure sports landscape.
