Indian Army Air Defence Chief Evaluates Operational Preparedness at Key Sites

Lieutenant General Sumer Ivan D'Cunha, who serves as the Director General and Colonel Commandant of the Indian Army Air Defence, recently completed a strategic three-day visit to Misa Camp and Bhalukmara from August 11 to 13. The visit aimed to assess the operational readiness of the Army Air Defence (AAD) units.

This visit occurred amidst escalating regional security tensions, especially following Operation Sindoor in May 2025. During this operation, Indian forces successfully neutralised significant Pakistani air defence sites in retaliation for a severe terror attack.

Lt Gen D'Cunha, during his review, engaged with personnel across various ranks, praising their training, administrative capabilities, and inventive approaches to challenges. He underscored the increasing risks posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and emphasized the necessity of deploying fully integrated AAD systems to counter these threats in contemporary combat situations.

His concerns align with global defence studies. A 2023 report by the RAND Corporation highlighted a 300 percent increase in UAS-related incidents in conflict zones since 2015, reinforcing the need for sophisticated, multi-layered defence networks.

Bhalukmara is historically significant for its support to Mukti Bahini operations during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Its strategic location, once associated with Pakistani military activities, continues to be a pivotal part of India’s defence strategy in the region.

Lt Gen D'Cunha's distinguished career began when he was commissioned into the Corps of Army Air Defence in December 1988, after graduating from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He possesses an MSc in Radars and Metallurgy, an M.Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies, and a PhD in Management. His career features international assignments and several awards for exemplary service.

The Indian Army remains dedicated to advancing its air defence capabilities, focusing on integrating cutting-edge technologies and preparing to address evolving security threats to ensure national protection.
