Indian Air Force Showcases S-400 System's Record-Breaking Long-Range Interception
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has unveiled groundbreaking video footage showcasing the capabilities of its Sudarshan S-400 long-range air defence missile system, signifying a notable advancement in military aviation. This footage, released for the first time, captures the system in operation during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, highlighting a record-breaking air kill.
Within the video, the S-400 system is depicted launching missiles over a desert-like terrain, demonstrating its precise targeting and extensive reach.
This air defence system, acquired from Russia, has been instrumental in the IAF's arsenal, notably during an interception of a Pakistani Air Force (PAF) aircraft deep within Pakistani territory, approximately 300 kilometers away. IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh confirmed the incident, remarking on the notable long-range hit during a briefing in October 2025.
Operation Sindoor, undertaken in response to rising tensions with Pakistan, involved various IAF strikes reportedly resulting in significant damage or destruction of at least a dozen PAF aircraft. The S-400's interception, notable for its remarkable range—reaching up to 314 kilometers in some accounts—possibly targeted a PAF Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). This feat establishes a new record in surface-to-air engagements globally.
The video release aligns with preparations for Vayu Shakti-2026, an upcoming air power display at Pokhran. Here, the IAF intends to exhibit its advanced aerial defence systems along with its diverse aircraft capabilities.
The footage has gained significant traction on social media platforms, including X, with users highlighting its strategic significance. One post described it as demonstrating a "historic long-range kill capability," underlining India's enhanced proficiency in integrated air defence.
This development underscores the IAF's dedication to bolstering national security through state-of-the-art technology. The S-400 system, renowned for engaging multiple targets at long ranges, remains a crucial element of India's strategy against aerial threats.
