Indian Air Force Seeks High-Power .50 BMG Sniper Rifles for Garud Special Forces
The Indian Air Force has embarked on an initiative to supply its elite Garud Special Forces with a new, high-power sniper rifle designed to target at extended ranges and serve an anti-materiel function. A Request for Information (RFI) has been issued for a rifle using the potent 12.7x99mm (.50 BMG) cartridge.
The new weapon is set to replace the Galil sniper rifles presently used by the Garuds, which have an effective range of about 800 meters. A rifle chambered in .50 BMG is expected to significantly increase engagement distances, enhancing the standoff capability of Garud sniper teams.
In addition to increased range against personnel, the .50 BMG round will also empower the Garuds to undertake anti-materiel operations. This includes targeting lightly armoured vehicles, radar systems, communication gear, and other unarmored or lightly protected assets.
The RFI demands a comprehensive system, which encompasses:

| A day telescopic sight |
| A thermal imaging scope for operations in low-light and complete darkness |
Thermal sights have the advantage of detecting heat signatures even when traditional night-vision devices face challenges, such as during moonless nights with heavy cloud cover.
The rifle must also support a variety of specialized ammunition types:

These specialized munitions extend the rifle's utility beyond conventional sniping, allowing it to safely dispose of unexploded ordnance, thereby enabling Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to neutralize devices from a safer distance.
Established in 2004 to safeguard Indian Air Force bases and installations from terrorist threats, the Garud Commando Force has evolved into a versatile special operations unit. It now undertakes counter-insurgency, combat search and rescue (CSAR), special reconnaissance, and other high-risk missions both domestically and abroad.
Providing the force with a long-range, high-power anti-materiel sniper capability will boost its capacity to operate independently in hostile environments or behind enemy lines, especially in scenarios requiring precise engagement of critical infrastructure or equipment.
The sniper rifle RFI is part of a broader effort by the IAF to modernize Garud equipment. Recent months have seen efforts to procure man-portable loitering munitions (with a minimum range of 40 km and dual warhead options) and high-altitude micro UAV systems optimized for surveillance under extreme conditions. These simultaneous procurements suggest a strategic initiative to enhance the Garuds' independent long-range strike, reconnaissance, and precision engagement capabilities.
The RFI does not specify either the quantity or the timeline for procurement. As is standard procedure, responses from manufacturers will be assessed before the IAF proceeds to the next acquisition phase under the Defence Acquisition Procedure.
The introduction of a .50 BMG sniper system would position Garud teams among the limited number of Indian special forces units equipped with genuine anti-materiel rifles. The blend of extended range, specialized ammunition, and sophisticated day/night optics will significantly enhance the force's tactical capabilities in both conventional and unconventional warfare situations.
This development highlights the Indian Air Force's ongoing commitment to augmenting the capabilities of its special operations force in line with evolving operational demands.
