India Unveils Indigenous MiG-29 Brake Parachute at EDEX 2025, Boosting Defence Export Potential
India's capabilities in defense manufacturing have been prominently highlighted with the unveiling of an indigenously developed brake parachute for the MiG-29 fighter aircraft by Kanpur-based Gliders India Limited. This launch took place at the Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX) 2025, marking a significant step for Indian technologies on the global stage.
This event marked the international debut of the brake chute, which represents a substantial leap in India's aeronautical parachute technology. It underscores the nation's increasing capacity to compete within the global defense export market.
The brake parachute is tailored to reduce the landing distance of the MiG-29, enhancing pilot safety and improving aircraft handling during landings. Its unicross-canopy system offers improved deceleration, which is particularly advantageous for operations on shorter or semi-prepared runways—conditions often encountered in active deployment zones.
A notable feature of this indigenous system is its lighter weight compared to the traditional Russian-made brake parachutes used on the MiG-29s. This reduction in weight aids in better aircraft performance while maintaining effective braking efficiency. Additionally, the design allows for easier installation and potentially lowers the long-term maintenance needs.
Gliders India Limited has bolstered its appeal with a more rapid and reliable supply chain. Unlike Russian systems, which often come with lengthy lead times, the Indian manufacturer promises delivery of spare canopies within months, thereby enhancing the operational availability for MiG-29 fleets.
The Egyptian Air Force, which operates a significant number of MiG-29 aircraft, is considered a primary potential customer for this new brake parachute. By adopting this modern Indian upgrade, Egypt could improve landing safety and enjoy shorter maintenance periods for its fleet.
India's participation in EDEX 2025 is part of a broader effort to expand its defense exports and introduce indigenous products on significant international platforms.
