India Successfully Tests Indigenous 1,000-Km Long-Range Attack Drone KAL at Pokhran

India’s indigenous long-range one-way attack drone KAL has been successfully flight-tested at the Pokhran range in Rajasthan, giving a fresh push to domestic efforts to develop unmanned strike systems. The trial, carried out from a vehicle-mounted launch platform, was conducted by Noida-based defence technology company IG Defence, which said the test validated the drone’s airframe, propulsion, avionics, navigation and mission architecture.

The successful test comes at a time when long-range unmanned systems are playing an increasingly visible role in modern conflicts, and when militaries are attaching greater importance to autonomous and precision-capable platforms. KAL has been developed as a long-range one-way attack drone intended for missions against designated targets, with a stated range of up to 1,000 km, endurance of seven to eight hours, payload capacity of up to 50 kg and an operating altitude of up to 5,000 metres above mean sea level.

According to the company, the drone uses a navigation architecture that combines multi-band Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and inertial navigation systems (INS), allowing it to fly autonomously through its mission profile. IG Defence said the platform can be configured for precision engagement of designated targets, including infrastructure, radar installations, air-defence systems and other strategic targets, subject to mission configuration and operational authorisations.

A key feature of the Pokhran trial was the use of a road-mobile launch setup. IG Defence said a vehicle-mounted configuration offers greater flexibility by allowing unmanned systems to be deployed from dispersed locations rather than relying exclusively on fixed launch infrastructure. That mobility is relevant for systems designed to operate over long ranges and in contested environments where concealment and rapid deployment may matter.

Developed amid global rise of one-way attack drones

KAL’s development is taking place against the backdrop of the expanding operational use of one-way attack drones in recent conflicts. The Russia-Ukraine war has shown how such systems can be used for long-range strikes and for putting sustained pressure on air-defence networks. Similar platforms have also been used in the Middle East and in attacks involving maritime targets in the Red Sea.

The growing battlefield use of these systems has drawn wider international attention to long-range unmanned strike platforms, particularly because they combine reach, autonomous navigation and relatively scalable production. For defence planners and industry alike, that combination has made such drones an increasingly important category of military technology.

Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of IG Defence, called the Pokhran test a milestone for the company and for India’s efforts towards self-reliance in advanced defence technology. He said recent conflicts had demonstrated the rising importance of long-range one-way attack drones in precision-strike and air-defence operations, and added that KAL was designed around emerging requirements for long range, autonomous operation, payload capacity and scalable indigenous production.

The company has positioned KAL as part of a broader long-range precision-strike portfolio. It said the system can also be integrated with IG Defence’s GRID battle management system, an AI-powered C5ISRT architecture designed to coordinate unmanned platforms and battlefield information. The aim of such integration is to bring together data from different battlefield sources within a common operational framework, reflecting the growing emphasis on networking unmanned systems with surveillance, intelligence and decision-making tools.

The Pokhran trial also points to the development of an indigenous industrial ecosystem for long-range unmanned systems. India has been placing increasing focus on domestic design and manufacturing in defence technology, and unmanned platforms have emerged as an area where private-sector companies are playing a growing role in innovation and production.

IG Defence said KAL is ready for the international market, subject to the requisite approvals from the Government of India and applicable export clearances. The company also said several Gulf nations have expressed interest in the system for strategic and battlefield requirements.

Beyond KAL, IG Defence is working on a wider range of indigenous defence technologies, including interceptor drones, FPV combat drones, autonomous UAVs, counter-UAS systems, electronic warfare systems, AI-enabled swarm technologies, tactical robotics and logistics drones. The company said this broader portfolio reflects an effort to build capabilities across multiple segments of unmanned and autonomous warfare rather than focusing on a single platform category.

For India, the development of a long-range unmanned strike system is significant in the context of changing warfare, where modern battlefields are increasingly shaped by the interaction of unmanned platforms, precision weapons, surveillance systems, electronic warfare and networked command-and-control architectures. KAL’s Pokhran trial, therefore, was not just a flight demonstration but a validation of a platform intended to support an indigenous long-range strike capability.

IG Defence said the successful test marked validation of the drone’s core systems — airframe, propulsion, avionics, navigation and mission architecture — as it moves through further development. With its stated 1,000-km range, extended endurance and vehicle-launched configuration, KAL is being developed for a segment of unmanned warfare that has gained global prominence. Further development, evaluations, approvals and operational assessment will determine its eventual employment and induction prospects.

For the Indian defence industry, the Pokhran trial highlights the growing technological ambition of the domestic unmanned systems sector and the continuing shift towards designing and manufacturing sophisticated defence platforms within the country.
