India-Myanmar Army Exercise IMBAX 2026 Begins at Umroi in Meghalaya

The fifth edition of the India-Myanmar Bilateral Army Exercise, IMBAX 2026, began on September 15 at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, bringing soldiers from the Indian Army and the Myanmar Army together for a 14-day drill that will run until September 28, 2026.

The exercise is designed to improve interoperability and coordination between the two armies, with a particular focus on preparing them to work together during missions carried out under a United Nations mandate. According to the Indian Army, the participating troops will train jointly and exchange operational experiences as well as best practices developed by their respective forces.

Beyond the immediate tactical objectives, IMBAX 2026 is also intended to deepen mutual understanding, camaraderie and military-to-military cooperation between India and Myanmar. Such interactions have made the exercise an important platform for bilateral defence engagement between the two neighbouring countries.

At the Joint Training Node in Umroi, the two sides will take part in a series of training activities over the course of the exercise. These sessions are expected to help the soldiers strengthen coordination while learning from each other’s operational experience in a structured joint environment.

The Myanmar contingent will also be shown various indigenous weapons and military equipment currently in service with the Indian Army. The display fits into the Army’s broader emphasis on greater use of domestically developed defence systems under the vision of “JAI se VIJAY.”

Over the years, Exercise IMBAX has become a key forum for professional military engagement between India and Myanmar. It provides a setting in which the two armies can improve working-level interaction while also building a shared understanding for operations that may require multinational cooperation.

The latest edition of IMBAX also reflects the continuing defence ties between New Delhi and Naypyidaw and their stated commitment to supporting peace, stability and security in the region.
