The Indian Army is in deep mourning following the untimely demise of Colonel Somnath Mishra, the Commanding Officer of the 63 Rashtriya Rifles (Bihar), who passed away on June 17, 2025, at the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment due to medical complications. The distinguished officer, stationed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, succumbed to a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment for critical injuries sustained in a road accident last month, officials confirmed.

Colonel Mishra, a highly respected and dedicated officer, was known for his exemplary leadership and commitment to the nation. Serving as the Commanding Officer of the 63 Rashtriya Rifles, he played a pivotal role in counter-insurgency operations in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. His contributions to the Indian Army and the Bihar Regiment were profound, leaving an indelible mark on his colleagues and the defense community.

According to sources, Colonel Mishra suffered severe injuries in a road accident in May 2025, which led to his hospitalization in Delhi. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he experienced a cardiac arrest, leading to his passing. The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps, under which Colonel Mishra served, expressed its deepest condolences, stating, “GOC and all ranks of White Knight Corps express deepest condolences on the untimely demise of Colonel Somnath Mishra, Commanding Officer, 63 Rashtriya Rifles (BIHAR) due to medical reasons at Base Hospital, Delhi. We firmly stand with the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”

The Northern Command of the Indian Army, led by Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, also paid tribute, saying, “Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, #ArmyCdrNC and all ranks of #DhruvaCommand express their deepest condolences on the untimely demise of Colonel Somnath Mishra, Commanding Officer, 63 Rashtriya Rifles (BIHAR).” The Bihar Regiment, to which Colonel Mishra belonged, mourned his loss, noting, “We remember his contribution to the regiment. Heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Colonel Mishra’s passing has been described as a significant loss to the armed forces, particularly for those serving in high-stress operational environments. Known as a “thorough officer and a gentleman par excellence,” he is survived by his wife and son, who are receiving support from the Indian Army during this difficult time.

Tributes poured in from across the military and civilian spheres, with many highlighting Colonel Mishra’s dedication, bravery, and leadership. Social media posts on X reflected the sentiment of loss, with users expressing grief and saluting the fallen officer.
