India Labels Red Fort Car Blast as Terrorist Act, Condemns 'Heinous' Attack
The Government of India has officially classified the explosion near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday as a terrorist attack. On Wednesday, a Cabinet resolution was passed condemning the occurrence as a "heinous act" carried out by anti-national elements.
Government’s Strong Stand Against Terrorism
Following the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the press that the Cabinet had resolved to ensure swift justice for those behind the attack and their supporters.
"The country has witnessed a heinous terrorist incident perpetrated by anti-national forces through a car explosion near Red Fort on 10th November," said Vaishnaw.
"The Cabinet directs that the investigation into the incident be pursued with utmost urgency and professionalism so that the perpetrators, their collaborators, and their sponsors are identified and brought to justice."
The minister affirmed India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, emphasizing that such acts would not deter the nation.
"The Cabinet unequivocally condemns this dastardly and cowardly act that has led to the loss of innocent lives. The government reiterates its unwavering commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," Vaishnaw said.
He also noted the Cabinet's appreciation for the international support and solidarity expressed after the attack.
PM Modi Visits Injured at LNJP Hospital
Prior to the CCS meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital to meet with those injured in the explosion. Returning from a two-day visit to Bhutan, he went directly to the hospital to interact with the victims, inquiring about their recovery and receiving briefings on their medical status from senior doctors and officials.
The Blast: 12 Dead, Several Injured
At least twelve people lost their lives and several others were injured when a Hyundai i20 exploded near Lal Quila Metro Station on November 10. The blast caused extensive damage in the vicinity and sent shockwaves through Delhi's central district.
Initial post-mortem reports indicated severe injuries among victims, including multiple fractures, head trauma, and ruptured internal organs. Many injuries were concentrated on the head, chest, and upper body, suggesting forceful impact against hard surfaces.
Forensic experts confirmed the absence of splinter traces, implying the use of a high-grade improvised explosive device (IED). Further laboratory analysis will determine the exact type of explosive used.
Key Suspect Identified
Earlier, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) obtained DNA samples from the mother of Dr. Umar Un Nabi, the alleged driver of the car involved in the blast. Sources suggest Nabi, who hails from Pulwama, may have connections with a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) module recently detected by Indian intelligence agencies.
NIA Takes Over Investigation
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has assumed responsibility for the investigation, establishing a dedicated team led by senior officers of Superintendent rank and above. This team will collaborate with the Delhi Police Special Cell, Intelligence Bureau, and Forensic Science Laboratory to conduct a thorough probe.
Officials have indicated that the NIA will investigate potential links to cross-border terror networks, online radicalization channels, and financial conduits that may have enabled the operation.
