India Announces Free Lifelong Railway Travel for Gallantry Medal Recipients

The Indian government has introduced a major welfare initiative by granting lifetime complimentary railway travel on Indian Railways to recipients of the Sena Medal (Gallantry), Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry), and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). This move is aimed at honoring the service and sacrifices of Armed Forces personnel.

The new scheme allows awardees to enjoy free lifetime travel in First Class, 2 AC, and AC Chair Car. Additionally, each medal recipient can travel with one companion at no extra cost.

The benefits of the scheme also extend to family members. Spouses, whether widows or widowers, can avail of this benefit until remarriage. Parents of unmarried posthumous awardees are also eligible.

This decision underscores the recognition of the bravery and sacrifices made by gallantry award winners, providing ongoing support and honoring their contributions along with their families.

In a parallel initiative, Indian Railways has established a “Framework of Cooperation” with the Army to enhance employment opportunities for ex-servicemen post-retirement.

The framework includes a 10% reservation in Level-2 and higher posts and a 20% reservation in Level-1 posts for ex-servicemen. Additionally, a 5–10% reservation is designated for retired Agniveers. For the year 2024–25, nearly 14,788 posts have been earmarked under this scheme.

Moreover, over 5,000 Level-1 positions are in the process of being filled, with several railway divisions signing agreements with Army units to expedite recruitment.

The initiative aims to facilitate a smooth transition to civilian careers for ex-servicemen, enhance awareness of available job opportunities, and build a supportive ecosystem for veterans and Agniveers.

These dual initiatives, offering free lifelong railway travel and increased job prospects, strongly reflect the commitment to honoring gallantry awardees and supporting Armed Forces personnel beyond their service tenure. 🇮🇳
