IAF’s Squadron Leader Neha Becomes First Non-Ladakhi Woman to Break 9 Hours at Khardung La Challenge 72K
The Indian Air Force has congratulated Squadron Leader Neha for a standout performance at the Khardung La Challenge 72K, one of India’s most demanding high-altitude ultra races. She finished the 72-km event in 8 hours, 56 minutes and 15 seconds, placing third overall and creating a new milestone in the race’s history.
What makes the result notable is not only the podium finish, but the barrier she broke in the process. With her sub-nine-hour timing, Sqn Ldr Neha became the first non-Ladakhi woman in the event’s 13 editions to complete the course in under nine hours. The achievement places her among the most successful female finishers in the race’s history and adds a fresh dimension to the competition’s record book.
The Khardung La Challenge is widely regarded as a severe test of endurance because of the extreme high-altitude conditions in which it is held. Athletes must cope with thin air, punishing terrain and the physical strain that comes with covering long distances at altitude. Completing the 72-km route in such an environment is itself considered a major accomplishment, even before the challenge of racing against the clock and against a competitive field is added.

In its message, the Indian Air Force described Sqn Ldr Neha’s performance as a remarkable feat of endurance and hailed it as another important moment in the history of the prestigious ultra challenge. The service’s praise reflects how such sporting achievements are viewed not merely as personal successes, but also as examples of the discipline and resilience associated with military personnel.
Her podium finish also highlights the presence of Indian Air Force officers in endurance and adventure sports that demand preparation, toughness and mental strength. Sqn Ldr Neha’s result adds to a growing list of achievements by Indian Armed Forces personnel in physically punishing competitions outside their professional duties.
