IAF Garud Commandos to Receive Advanced Indigenous Micro UAV System Enhancing Surveillance and Endurance
The Indian Air Force has launched a procurement initiative for a compact Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system, specifically tailored for the Garud Commando Force. This move is intended to enhance surveillance and operational capabilities in difficult environments.
Designed for High-Altitude and Extreme Conditions
Officials state that the UAV system in development will function effectively at altitudes reaching 16,400 feet and withstand temperatures ranging from -20°C to +50°C. Additionally, it will be adept at operating across various terrains and climatic conditions. The primary purpose of this system is surveillance and reconnaissance at high altitudes, providing vital operational support.
Enhanced Range, Endurance and Capabilities
The upcoming UAV is set to include a minimum mission range of 15 kilometers, an endurance of at least 60 minutes, and the capability for both day and night surveillance. It will also provide real-time situational awareness and target acquisition. The system is designed to be man-portable, requiring a crew of two for operation.
Advanced Operational Features
The UAV is expected to be equipped with features such as autonomous vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), secure encrypted communication links, and the ability to operate in environments where GPS is unavailable. It will be compatible with India's navigation systems and offer multiple operational modes including autonomous, manual, and target tracking.
Focus on Indigenous Development
The procurement process emphasizes acquiring systems under the ‘Buy Indian’ or ‘IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ categories, ensuring at least 60% indigenous content. The Defence Ministry is encouraging participation from Indian vendors, start-ups, and MSMEs as part of the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defense manufacturing.
Boost to Special Forces Capability
This new UAV system is anticipated to considerably boost the operational capabilities of the Garud Special Forces, especially during high-risk and isolated missions.
Future-Ready Air Power
The initiative underscores India's commitment to integrating advanced unmanned systems, fostering indigenous innovation, and enhancing network-centric warfare capabilities within its armed forces.
