Historic Inclusion of Women Agniveers in IAF Band at 77th Republic Day Parade 2026
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to achieve a historic milestone at the 77th Republic Day Parade with the inclusion of nine women Agniveers in the IAF band contingent on January 26, 2026.
In another landmark event, Flying Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar will raise the national flag alongside President Droupadi Murmu during the ceremonial parade at Kartavya Path, highlighting the increasing involvement of women in the Indian Air Force.
IAF Band and Marching Contingent
The IAF band will be under the leadership of Sergeant Charles Antony Daniel, while the 144-member IAF marching contingent will be led by Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar.
Within the band, there will be 75 personnel, consisting of 66 Agniveers and nine women Agniveers, with the rest being air warriors. This marks the debut of women Agniveers performing with the IAF band at the Republic Day Parade.
Additionally, Squadron Leader Nikita Choudhary, Flight Lieutenant Prakhar Chandrakar, and Flight Lieutenant Dinesh Murali will act as supernumerary officers in the IAF contingent.
Grand Flypast with 29 Aircraft
The Republic Day flypast will showcase a total of 29 aircraft, including 16 fighter jets, four transport aircraft, and nine helicopters, organized into eight formations.
Officials have indicated that the flypast will occur in two phases, with four formations during the parade and four after it concludes. A significant spearhead formation will fly during the parade to commemorate the success of Operation Sindoor, conducted in May of the previous year.
IAF Highlights Growing Role of Agniveers
Air Commodore Imran H. Zaidi, from the Directorate of Ceremonial at Air Headquarters, stated that the participation of women Agniveers demonstrates the Air Force's commitment to inclusivity and professional excellence.
Sharing his thoughts, Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar expressed, “It is my first time in a Republic Day Parade, and I feel extremely proud to represent my Service on Kartavya Path.” He mentioned that the contingent begins rehearsals as early as 4 am, dedicating 7–8 hours daily to perfect their coordination.
The groundbreaking participation of women Agniveers in the IAF band, along with an impressive aerial display, is set to make the Republic Day Parade 2026 a pivotal moment in the Indian Air Force's pursuit of increased representation and operational excellence.
