Havildar Jugnoo Secures Silver at 2025 World Boxing Cup in Astana

Havildar Jugnoo from the Indian Army's 8 Mahar Regiment achieved a significant milestone by winning the silver medal in the 85kg category at the World Boxing Cup 2025 in Astana. The event, which concluded on July 6 at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Art Palace, showcased some of the best boxing talents from around the globe.

Jugnoo's path to the finals was marked by intense competition, where he demonstrated exceptional determination and technical prowess. His accomplishment not only highlights the strength of Indian boxing but also the support system within the Indian Army's sports initiatives.

The Army Sports Institute (ASI) located in Pune, which was established in 2001, has been instrumental in Jugnoo's development as a boxer. The ASI is renowned for providing top-tier training and international exposure, contributing to the success of many athletes from the military ranks.

Jugnoo's success is particularly poignant given his ties to the Mahar Regiment. Historically, the regiment faced exclusion from the Indian Army's class-based regiments in 1892 but was reinstated in 1941. This achievement not only underscores Jugnoo's personal excellence but also the enduring spirit and inclusivity of the Mahar Regiment, which recruits from Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.

The 2025 World Boxing Cup, commencing on June 3, concluded with the distribution of 20 gold medals across different weight categories, with significant competition from nations like the USA. Jugnoo's silver medal is among India's top performances, highlighting the country's growing influence in the international boxing arena.

This accomplishment is anticipated to inspire future athletes and reaffirm the Indian Army's dedication to nurturing sports talent across various disciplines.
