HAL Receives Three More GE F404-IN20 Engines for Tejas Mk1A Programme
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has received three more F404-IN20 engines from GE Aerospace for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A programme, providing fresh support to a fighter project whose delivery schedule has been affected by shortages in engine supplies.
The engines were shipped to HAL in August 2026, adding to the pool of powerplants required to keep Tejas Mk1A production moving. GE Aerospace said it remained proud to partner HAL and the Indian Air Force in powering India’s indigenous fighter aircraft.
The latest shipment is important because engine availability has become one of the main factors shaping how quickly HAL can complete and hand over Tejas Mk1A aircraft. HAL has maintained that its production facilities are ready for the programme, but each aircraft can move towards delivery only when the required F404-IN20 engines are available.
GE Aerospace is contracted to supply 99 F404-IN20 engines to HAL under an agreement signed in 2021. The deal is valued at approximately Rs 5,375 crore. The Indian Air Force has placed an order for 180 Tejas Mk1A aircraft, making a steady engine supply chain central to the programme’s execution.
HAL’s former chairman, D.K. Sunil, said in April that GE Aerospace had assured the company it would deliver 20 F404 engines in the second half of 2026, covering the period from June to December. He had described that number as a pessimistic estimate, while indicating that deliveries could end up being higher. The three engines shipped in August fall within that expected supply window.
The F404-IN20 is the selected powerplant for the Tejas fighter and has been adapted for the Indian aircraft programme. GE Aerospace says the engine has the highest thrust in the F404 family and includes a higher-flow fan, single-crystal turbine blades and other specialised components developed for the Indian fighter.
The engine also has a long military aviation history and is used on thousands of combat aircraft worldwide. Its integration with Tejas has been part of the aircraft’s development since the flight-test stage of the programme.
The current supply effort is tied to the revival of an engine production line that had earlier been shut down. GE Aerospace had already completed its previous commitment to HAL in 2016, when it delivered 65 F404-IN20 engines for the original Tejas LCA programme. With no further requirement at that stage, production of the engine was then discontinued.
That changed in 2021, when HAL placed another order for 99 F404-IN20 engines for the Tejas Mk1A programme. GE Aerospace restarted production after the five-year shutdown and reactivated suppliers across its international supply chain to meet the renewed demand.
Bringing an established military engine line back to life after such a gap involves more than restarting an assembly unit. It requires supplier networks, manufacturing processes and specialised industrial capabilities to be restored and aligned again. In that sense, the F404-IN20 programme has also highlighted the importance of resilient aerospace supply chains for long-running defence projects.
GE Aerospace and the Tejas programme teams had also worked for years to customise the engine to suit Indian Air Force requirements. The resulting F404-IN20 configuration powers the single-engine Tejas platform and forms a critical part of the aircraft’s overall performance.
Engine availability has repeatedly emerged as one of the key challenges affecting the Tejas Mk1A production timetable. HAL has said its facilities can support the programme, but completion and delivery of aircraft depend on receiving engines from GE according to schedule.
The issue has also had contractual consequences. HAL officials have previously said the engine supply agreement includes provisions for liquidated damages if F404 engines are delayed. Such clauses are meant to provide contractual protection when delivery schedules are not met.
The three-engine shipment therefore adds a tangible number of powerplants to the Tejas Mk1A production line. Predictable and continued deliveries will remain crucial as HAL tries to raise output and meet the Indian Air Force’s requirements.
The Tejas Mk1A programme is a major part of India’s effort to expand indigenous combat-aircraft manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported fighter platforms. Built on the broader Tejas programme, it draws on a wider ecosystem of Indian aerospace and defence suppliers, while still relying on international partners for selected critical systems such as the engine.
For HAL, keeping production on track will require coordination across the full aircraft manufacturing chain. Engine availability is the most visible dependency, but timely assembly also depends on the supply and integration of many other systems, components and equipment.
For the Indian Air Force, the timely expansion of the Tejas fleet remains important to its wider modernisation plans. The order for 180 Mk1A aircraft represents a substantial commitment to the indigenous fighter and gives HAL a long-term production requirement.
The arrival of the three F404-IN20 engines in August is therefore being watched closely as the Tejas Mk1A programme advances. It adds to the flow of critical propulsion systems and could help support further aircraft production as HAL works to accelerate deliveries.
The development also reflects the interconnected nature of modern fighter programmes, where delivery of an indigenous aircraft can depend on both domestic manufacturing and international supply chains for specialised components. Keeping those chains reliable and predictable remains essential to maintaining production schedules.
With GE contracted to provide 99 engines and the Indian Air Force having ordered 180 aircraft, sustained deliveries of F404-IN20 powerplants will remain central to HAL’s ability to build production momentum and meet the Tejas Mk1A programme’s long-term goals.
